BMW Debuts iX5 Hydrogen in US

“Not Ready to Buy: Not Yet”

The BMW Spartanburg factory is presently kept occupied as it forges ahead with creating a flotilla of X5s running on hydrogen power. Regrettably, only five of these have been earmarked so far for the American market.

As per BMW Blog’s report, units of the car will be manufactured in Spartanburg and transferred to Munich for installation of the dual hydrogen tanks and fuel cell. These components have already begun to be created. Eventually only five cars will return to the USA, though no firm plans have been decided on how they will be utilized. The models will reach America by 2023’s conclusion.

“Five iX5 Hydrogen vehicles are on their way to the US as part of this global pilot program,” a BMW spokesperson declared. “As these are experimental prototypes, we can’t just put them out into the public domain like we did with past initiatives. We are currently devising ways to get the vehicles into the hands of media and other key figures, but these plans are still being worked on.”

The BMW X5, now referred to as the iX5 Hydrogen, powered by hydrogen, is a component of the grand vision of the German carmaker. Despite the pressure from forces in politics, BMW is firm in its approach: they are not backing down, maintaining that there is potential for the longevity of both internal combustion engines, as well as electric vehicles, and even hydrogen-electric cars like the iX5.

The production of the iX5 and its deployment onto the roads is a key stride in constructing a viable hydrogen powered vehicle. Oliver Zipse, CEO of BMW, trusts that a practicable, hydrogen fuelled automobile can be provided to consumers by the end of this decade.

In California, five cars will be subjected to evaluation due to the fact that this is where the required hydrogen technology exists. Despite representing an advantageous region for electric cars, the Golden State only has 81 refueling stations for hydrogen. For this rationale, Toyota and Hyundai exclusively vend their Mirai and Nexo models in California.

The dearth of infrastructure is the most salient difficulty with hydrogen, but BMW and Honda have promised to introduce a hydrogen-energy-driven CR-V by 2024– suggesting the outlook will likely enhance notably. Nevertheless, it could be expected that similar structures will be part of future FCEVs manufactured by BMW.
