‘Satisfying the Roadster with a Model S Plaid for $30,000.
If you’ve been wanting for a thousand horse-power electric cabriolet, a firm based in California is able to meet your need with a cabriolet version of the Tesla Model S Plaid.
Newport Convertible Engineering (NCE) focuses on modifying various cars to become convertibles, and after finishing a regular Model S this way, it is now Plaid’s time. In a sense, this is the closest thing that we can get to the Tesla Roadster, as per Elon Musk’s predictions, which could be available by 2024.
The NCE-presented Model S Plaid seems to be put together in a neat and tidy fashion. Its canvas roof adopts the form of the vehicle’s body shape, and even has the capability of power-folding as can be noticed in the below footage (be advised: bright lights).
“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” – a timeless saying which rings true when it comes to the design of the car. The roof, for instance, does not seem to fit into the rear section of the vehicle, creating an unsightly bulge. The A and B pillars also appear to be out of place, with their ‘chopped-up’ look, despite having trim to smooth the top edges and provide structural support with the rollover bar.
Things to consider when choosing to augment your beloved Tesla include not only the cost. No exact figures are available on the maker’s website, but reports suggest a typical estimation of approximately $30,000 solely for the transmutation. Furthermore, anyone wishing to have electronic folding capabilities will also need to pay an extra $10,000.
The ever-trendy Mazda MX-5 Miata can easily be purchased with just some spare cash. However, it doesn’t seem to have the same appeal as Heritage Customs conversion of the 90k drop-top Land Rover Defender 90, even though their job is way more cost efficient.
If a Tesla Model S Plaid Convertible isn’t what you desire, NCE are happy to perform comparable services on an array of other vehicle models. Spanning from bigger SUVs, such as the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, to antique autos and supercars, their prior catalog of projects is varied. Indeed, they have previously tackled the bizarre idea of turning a Toyota Solara into a convertible pickup truck!
