BMW Leipzig Plant Starts Electric Crossover Production
2023 marks an abundance of inaugurations for Mini. The freshest Countryman will launch as the marque’s premiere all-electric crossover, affording it the title of the automobile company’s initial vehicle to be fully assembled in Germany.
Beginning in 2020, the BMW Group plant in Leipzig will be adding a new vehicle to its assembly line: the battery-powered Countryman. “The new all-electric Mini Countryman highlights what the brand is all about: an electrified go-kart experience with a strong emphasis on a reduced environmental footprint,” said Wurst. “This vehicle shows that the company is committed to making a positive impact on the environment without compromising on performance and fun.”
At the present, roughly one out of every five Minis being manufactured include various electrification components. In the next few years, though, this number is expected to increase. The Countryman is on its way in meeting Mini’s objectives regarding eco-friendly specifications. Even the high-powered cells providing electricity to the upcoming Countryman will be produced at the factories located in Leipzig.
A large investment of approximately $850 million will be made by the BMW Group with the ambition of extending e-component production through the addition of eight new production lines by 2024. This move will not merely create 1,000 jobs for the facility, but furthermore certify its sustainable future.
Sustainability is of paramount significance to the Leipzig facility and BMW Group as a whole. There are four wind turbines at the plant that can generate copious amounts of energy. In the year 2021, no less than 21.9 Gigawatt-hours of electricity were produced just from these turbines. Furthermore, in 2017, the establishment put in place a provisional energy system involving 700 state-of-the-art BMW i3 batteries.
Leipzig has branched out from fossil fuels and changed to consuming hydrogen instead.
