Defrost System Malfunction Leads to Recall of 200K Jeep Hybrids

Recall for Software Issue Disabling Windshield Defrost in Select Wrangler and Grand Cherokee 4xes

Jeep has announced a recall for approximately 200,000 plug-in hybrid electric models. The car company has issued a notice, which has been published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, stating that both the Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe may have a software malfunction that could disable the windshield defrosting system under specific circumstances.

A limited number of 2021-2024 Wranglers and 2022-2024 Grand Cherokees were assembled with faulty programming in their hybrid control processor software. This issue has led to a recall of 139,318 Wrangler 4xes and 59,825 Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrid electric vehicles that have been manufactured since the start of production for these models.

Jeep manufactured the impacted vehicles between September 2nd, 2020 and August 24th, 2023, and July 23rd, 2021 to December 5th, 2023. The company plans to resolve the issue by upgrading the hybrid control processor. The updated software has already been integrated into the production of the affected models, so if you are expecting to receive a new Jeep, there is no need for concern regarding this issue.

The Wrangler 4xe has faced its second recall within a span of four months. Back in November, Jeep had issued a warning to owners against charging their vehicle’s battery as it posed a possible danger of fire, impacting a total of 32,000 cars.

According to Stellantis, the discovery of the problem with defrost systems was made in June 2023 and has been under investigation until January. They plan to notify impacted owners by April 5. If you suspect that your Jeep might be involved, we recommend visiting the NHTSA’s recall page and entering your vehicle identification number (VIN).
