Equivalent to AMG’s Past V12s: A High-Performance Sedan
After the debut of the latest Mercedes-Benz E-Class in the previous year, the Germany-based car manufacturer has now unveiled an AMG version. Say hello to the fresh and powerful E53 Hybrid 4Matic+, a luxury sedan with a whopping 603 horsepower from its six-cylinder engine. Boasting of a dynamic design and upscale interior, this vehicle is a dream super sedan for any car enthusiast.
A considerable improvement over its forerunner in all aspects, the E53 is sufficiently fast to amaze previous E63 owners and luxuriously comfortable to captivate S-Class owners. Now, let’s delve deeper into this electrifying performer, also available in a wagon variant.
The motor under the hood of this vehicle is a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, which has been combined with a permanently excited E-synchronous machine to reach an impressive total output of 577 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. With the inclusion of the Race Start launch control feature (included in the AMG Dynamic Plus Package), power can be boosted even further to 603 hp, allowing for a lightning-fast acceleration from 0-62 mph in just 3.8 seconds. However, for those who desire an even higher top speed, there is the option to add the AMG Driver’s Package, which raises the limit from 155 mph to 174 mph.
According to Mercedes, the E53 Hybrid has the ability to reach maximum speeds of 87 mph solely on electric power. The electric motor has been seamlessly incorporated into the nine-speed AMG Speedshift TCT transmission, similar to how BMW has implemented it in their 550e plug-in hybrid model.
The battery’s overall size is 28.6 kWh and it is situated beneath the floor of the trunk. When connected to a 60 kW DC fast charger, the battery can reach a charging level of 10-80% in a mere 20 minutes. The car also includes regenerative braking, which enables it to come to a complete stop without needing to use the brakes.
The AMG Dynamic Select program offers numerous drive modes for customers to select from. These options include traditional modes like Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Individual, and Smoothness, as well as Electric and Battery Hold programs.
In the realm of electricity, the E53 Hybrid employs a 161-horsepower electric motor which purportedly allows for a mileage of over 62 miles solely on electric power. However, our prediction is that the Environmental Protection Agency’s evaluations will show less optimistic results. Utilizing the Battery Hold feature, the E53 incorporates both its internal combustion engine and electric motor without depleting the charge level of the battery. This enables drivers to preserve the electric range when required, such as in areas with low air pollution standards and urban hubs.
Enhancing its dynamic appeal is the uniquely engineered AMG Ride Control suspension, equipped with adaptive damping to provide a seamless fusion of athletic performance and luxurious comfort. Notably, the front axle boasts a broader track width compared to its E-Class foundation, while the rear axle benefits from enhanced elastokinematics, resulting in firmer rubber mounts.
Mercedes-AMG has recently improved the rigidity of its body shell by installing a fresh strut brace between the front suspension strut mounts. This modification was made to enhance the car’s sideways movements while driving. Similarly, more struts have been added from the side members to the rear, providing better driving accuracy and stability.
The E53 Hybrid comes equipped with rear-axle steering as a standard feature, which greatly assists with maneuvering and enhancing agility. When the vehicle is moving at speeds below 62 mph, the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction of the front wheels, while at speeds above 62 mph, they turn in the same direction.
The dual-valve flexible damping adapts to each individual wheel, taking into account the varying conditions of the road and the style of driving. There are three preset options: Comfort, Sport, and Sport+. The car’s braking ability is powered by 14.5-inch ventilated rotors in the front, and 14.1-inch ones at the back.
The Mercedes-AMG E53 Hybrid 4Matic+ boasts a sophisticated appearance, setting it apart from other models in the Mercedes lineup. Its front view is distinguished by an impressive AMG radiator grille featuring vertical slats and a tasteful lighting display. Adding to its sporty appeal, the performance sedan also showcases beefed-up front fenders and aggressive air inlets on the front bumper.
The E53’s distinct side skirts from AMG add a more aggressive appearance to the vehicle. While 19-inch wheels are included as standard, purchasers have the option to upgrade to either 20-inch or 21-inch forged wheels. A standard AMG lip spoiler and a revamped rear bumper, equipped with an integrated diffuser and quadruple tailpipes, further enhance the design. Overall, the overall look of the AMG surpasses that of the regular E-Class.
As predicted, the inside is overflowing with opulence and advances in technology. However, AMG has added their own unique touch to the interior design.
The E53 Hybrid boasts a number of unique features, such as illuminated accents integrated into the open-pore ash wood trim. The standard AMG model comes equipped with Artico (artificial leather) and Microcut (microfiber) adorned sports seats, complete with striking red stitching and distinctive seat designs. For those seeking even more luxurious options, AMG Performance seats are available. Additionally, every model includes a Nappa leather-trimmed AMG Performance steering wheel as part of the standard equipment package.
Customers have the option to select the MBUX Superscreen with a passenger monitor for an additional fee, while the MBUX multimedia system comes as standard equipment. This all-inclusive infotainment package consists of exclusive AMG features, such as the available AMG Track Pace package and AMG Performance.
For a period of one year after its release, a special version called the Edition 1 will be available. This particular model will feature exclusive Manufaktur paint, bold black stripes, and standard exterior design packages like the AMG Carbon Exterior choice, along with distinct interior accents.
The official pricing and local release date for the E53 from Mercedes is still undisclosed, but this information will be announced at a later time within this year.
