1981 Chevrolet Camaro Yenko Turbo Z: Last Original Don Yenko
Chevrolet will soon be concluding the production of its iconic Camaro. After the completion of the 2023 model year, there will be no more new examples available for purchase. Nonetheless, additional options remain open to those wishing to get their hands on a classic Camaro; such as the 1981 Yenko Turbo Z tha is set to go up for sale at the auction.
This aftermarket builder and tuner limited their production to a mere 19 turbocharged Camaro Z28s, and the Turbo Z constituting one of the last handcrafted Don Yenko modifications. This specimen holds only 38,869 miles displayed on its odometer and is even more rare as it was erected with the Stage II upgrade.
Under the bodywork of the classic Chevy houses a 350-cubic-inch V8 engine with an automatic transmission. A Turbo International turbocharger pumps seven psi of boost into the stock carburetor, delivering an estimated 240-250 horses. Aside from this addition, Yenko integrated its own special fuel heating and water injection mechanisms to the Camaro, confirming they managed to keep that quarter mile time shaved by three seconds.
The Stage II package, for which Yenko only created three specimens, was made up of Weld two-piece rims, Koni shocks and Guldstrand polyurethane suspension. Inside, the cabin featured Kamp leather seats combined with a Racemark steering wheel – all matching perfectly with its white bodywork, complete with Yenko detailing, as well as a contrasting black interior.
A Camaro Turbo Z is expected to be auctioned off at Mecum’s Kissimmee 2024 event with the original build sheet and its COPO certification. Prices are projected in the range of $60,000-$80,000. If you’re a fan of classic vehicles, this car belongs to Thompson’s Muscle Car Collection which boasts over 30 fascinating vehicles.
