Similar to the recently released Vantage GT3, the Vantage GT4 draws heavily from its Aston Martin namesake. These two GT models were skillfully crafted by the automaker’s racing partner, Aston Martin Racing (AMR). The latest unveiling of the Vantage in Racing Green, currently Aston Martin’s most sought-after hue, was executed by AMR.
As the Vantage GT3 was being developed, AMR also worked on creating the Vantage GT4. However, strict rules were in place that limited the changes that could be made to the GT4 program. Aston Martin has stated that approximately 80% of the road car’s structural and mechanical design is shared by the GT4 Vantage. One major difference is the addition of a customized roll cage, which AMR installed onto the bonded aluminum chassis prior to adding the bodywork. Additionally, while most of the body panels on the Vantage GT4 are standard production pieces, the hood stands out with its multiple air vents.
When it comes to its design, the Vantage GT4 remains similar to its street-legal counterpart. Yet, Aston Martin Racing (AMR) utilized Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to enhance the aerodynamics of the GT4, with insights from the renowned Aston Martin Design team. Though the changes to the aerodynamic package were limited, the Vantage GT4 did receive a larger front splitter and a new rear wing. Nonetheless, these adjustments have greatly improved downforce and minimized drag, surpassing the levels of the previous Vantage GT4.
In the meantime, the Vantage GT4 boasts a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine and a transmission that are based on the ones found in the Vantage street vehicle. Essentially utilizing a Mercedes V8 motor, the engine in the Vantage GT4 utilizes a Bosch Motorsport ECU programmed with exclusive software created by AMR. To enhance its performance on the track, the racecar’s standard automatic gearbox has been upgraded to ZF/AMR Motorsport software, transforming it from an eight-speed to a six-speed paddle shift system without an automatic mode.
AMR has enhanced electronic systems to guarantee precise management and control of the engine and turbo systems, enabling the Vantage GT4 to meet the stringent Balance of Performance standards set by GT4 racing authorities. Furthermore, AMR has substituted the standard car’s instrument visuals with the updated Bosch DDU11 display.
Surprisingly, the layout of the latest Vantage contributes to the efficient cooling of its engine and brakes. Its expanded radiator aperture allows for increased airflow in the engine’s cooling mechanism, while also providing ample cooling air to the brakes.
A few modifications were also implemented to the body structure of the vehicle. The internal attachment points for the suspension system remain unchanged from those of the road version, although certain adjustments to the suspension linkages were permitted. This was allowed by regulations in order to achieve the appropriate camber range for racing purposes, while also ensuring that the GT4 race car could properly accommodate the required 18-inch wheel and tire combination. The latest Vantage GT4 now boasts customized forged aluminum wheels, designed and engineered according to AMR’s specifications.
The launch of the Vantage GT4 presents a significant upgrade with its latest addition of two-way adjustable KW dampers, provided by AMR’s trusted partner KW. Drawing feedback from drivers during the last six years, AMR has developed an improved Vantage GT4 that offers enhanced precision and handling in its driving experience. Despite these advancements, the updated racer still maintains the key characteristics that make it user-friendly, in line with its previous models.
The Vantage GT4 production is currently in progress, and the vehicle will make its global racing premiere at the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge event as part of the Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona in January. More than forty units of the Vantage GT4 are being constructed by AMR for the upcoming 2024 season. At the same time, the second quarter of 2024 marks the arrival of the new Vantage model.
