EPA to Adopt Europe’s Relaxed Emissions Regulations as Model

America Prepares to Loosen Emissions Standards Following Europe’s Lead

A group of sources have revealed that the US government has altered its position on future emissions regulations and will ease certain aspects of its strategy to combat climate change, resulting in a delay in the transition to electric vehicles. To provide context, let’s take a brief look back at April 2023, when the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) declared its plans to enforce stricter emissions regulations from 2027 to 2032. Throughout the remainder of that year, leaders of automotive unions and dealerships urged for a reassessment, citing concerns that a swift shift to electric vehicles would lead to job losses and cripple the automotive sales industry. Despite the accuracy of these claims being debatable, they gained traction and have caught the attention of the government – much like how lawmakers in the European Union were compelled to take action.

According to these sources, there are plans to ease the regulations on tailpipe emissions, and there will no longer be a strong push for electric vehicles to be sold until after 2030.It has been reported by multiple sources that there is a plan in place to loosen the restrictions on tailpipe emissions. As a result, the stringent requirement for electric vehicle sales before 2030 may no longer be enforced.

The sources requested to stay anonymous as the recently proposed regulations are still undergoing finalization.

The events that transpired in the European Union bear resemblance to what occurred there before. Proposed Euro 7 emissions standards were set to be implemented as early as next year. Starting July of 2025, manufacturers would have been mandated to reduce NOx discharges by a substantial 35% and decrease exhaust particulates by 13%. This would have called for a drastic change, and while some automakers promptly expressed their support for the measure, many others – such as industry giants like BMW – vehemently opposed it. Thanks to their strong dissent, only buses and heavy vehicles will currently be subject to the newly imposed Euro 7 tailpipe emission regulations.

As we anticipate confirmation (the official guidelines are set to be released in early spring), let’s reflect on whether this is favorable or unfavorable.

During a discussion about the possible expenses of a potential Escape EV, Ford’s CEO Jim Farley stated that “it’s not reality anymore” to envision widespread adoption of EVs happening within this decade. This is due to the current post-pandemic world we are living in, where practical factors such as interest rates must be considered. For most Americans, purchasing EVs that are more expensive than gas cars is simply not a feasible option. Additionally, there are other challenges that need to be addressed, such as the need for further development of the charging network, the slow distribution of NACS Supercharger adapters, the low resale value of existing EVs, and the high maintenance costs.

However, these issues are being addressed at an astonishingly fast rate. As 2023 was declared the warmest year in recorded human history, surpassing even initial projections, it raises the question of what other consequences could arise from loosened emissions restrictions.
