Each year, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) sets stricter standards for vehicles to earn their prestigious Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ awards. Recently, the organization announced the adjustments they will be implementing in their criteria for 2024, with plans to update the tests by 2025.The IIHS is constantly reevaluating and enhancing their requirements to ensure that the chosen vehicles truly prioritize safety above all else. The organization has confirmed to Motor1 that these changes seek to further promote and reward automakers who make safety a top priority.For the 2024 awards, vehicles will now be required to have pedestrian detection technology in order to qualify for either Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+. This feature helps detect pedestrians in front of the vehicle and can alert the driver or even apply the brakes if a collision is imminent. Additionally, vehicles must meet higher standards for headlights to earn a good rating, with the IIHS striving to improve visibility for drivers on the road.Looking ahead to the 2025 awards, there will be a new test added to the criteria: a small overlap passenger-side crash test. This simulates what would happen if the right front corner of a vehicle collided with another object, such as a pole or tree. The IIHS

This year, the IIHS award criteria has undergone significant revisions. Starting in 2024, a satisfactory rating from the IIHS is mandatory for the side crash test in order to qualify for either a TSP or TSP+ award. In the past, the organization conducted separate evaluations for pedestrian front crash prevention during the day and at night. However, these assessments are now being combined into one test, with trials in both light conditions, to prevent vehicles from receiving awards solely based on their performance at a specific time of day. To be considered for either accolade, a vehicle must receive an acceptable or good rating.

In 2020, during its frontal overlap examination, the IIHS implemented the use of a mannequin in the driver’s seat. In order to achieve a Top Safety Pick+ distinction by 2024, a car must receive a rating of acceptable or good. Additionally, the institute is modifying the methodology for evaluating the small overlap front collision test. Results from both the driver’s and passenger’s side assessments will now be combined into one overall category, with the lower score determining the final rating. Furthermore, all variations of a particular vehicle model must earn satisfactory or superior ratings in order to qualify for either award.

The upcoming year poses a greater challenge, as stated by the organization.

According to IIHS spokesperson Joe Young, the organization plans to elevate their standards even further for the 2025 Top Safety Picks. However, the changes will be more subtle in comparison. The focus of these updates will be on the updated moderate overlap crash test. Young stated, “A good or acceptable rating in that test is a prerequisite for the 2024 Top Safety Pick+ award.” In 2025, the requirements for the “plus” award will be raised to a good rating, while the regular Top Safety Pick will only need an acceptable rating.

The IIHS awards are determined by their chosen criteria, which is based on the current calendar year rather than a vehicle’s specific model year. As such, even with the release of 2025 models coming soon, the organization will continue to use the testing standards set for 2024.

Currently, there have been a total of 22 vehicles awarded the prestigious Top Safety Pick+ designation, and an additional 49 vehicles have earned the Top Safety Pick title for the year 2024. To provide context, during the IIHS’s announcement of its 2023 standards, there were 28 Top Safety Pick+ winners and only 20 models that met the criteria for the regular Top Safety Pick recognition.
