BMW Unveils Spring 2024 Model Enhancements: i5, 5 Series and Beyond

New i5 and 5 Series Models Coming This Year

BMW USA has recently revealed a series of updates and modifications for the upcoming spring of 2024. The main focus of these changes will be on the 5 Series and i5 collections.The German automaker has announced that the 5 Series will undergo significant changes, making it even more desirable to customers. This year, we can expect to see the i5 xDrive40 model join the current range of vehicles available locally. Positioned between the eDrive40 and M60 versions, this newcomer boasts a double electric motor system, producing a total of 389 horsepower and 435 lb-ft of torque. As a luxurious all-wheel drive sedan, it is notably swift, achieving a 0 – 60 mph acceleration in just 5.2 seconds and reaching a maximum speed of 130 mph.

The engines extract energy from an 84.3 kWh battery. This unit can be replenished to 80% capacity in just half an hour when hooked up to a DC rapid charger, thanks to its impressive charging rate of 205 kW. The i5 xDrive40 model is equipped with the useful Plug & Charge Multi Contract feature, which allows for convenient and automatic payments at various public charging stations.

In March, manufacturing begins for the i5 xDrive40, with an estimated starting price of $70,100. This price is quite reasonable compared to the i5 eDrive40, priced at $66,800, and the M60 which starts at $84,100.

For those who are not quite prepared to fully commit to an electric car, the non-electric 5 Series is getting a fresh addition to its lineup. The high-performance 550e xDrive plug-in hybrid strikes a balance between traditional gasoline engines and fully electric vehicles, offering both impressive power and efficiency. Under the hood, a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine works alongside an electric motor to generate a formidable 483 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque.

The 550e boasts impressive performance, with the ability to go from 0 to 60 mph in just four seconds. In its electric mode, it is restricted to a top speed of 87 mph, but with assistance from the combustion engine, it can reach a maximum speed of 155 mph. The electric motor is cleverly incorporated into the eight-speed automatic transmission, and the battery pack has been skillfully relocated, resulting in increased trunk room.

BMW announced that significant information such as the fully electric range and cost will be revealed as the on-sale date approaches. The previous year, the renowned German car brand had declared that the 550e model would be sold at a price of $73,800, yet this could have been subject to alteration by now. WLTP calculations suggest that this particular version can travel between 49 to 56 miles solely on electricity, but we anticipate less impressive assessments from the EPA. Unfortunately, the i5 Touring model will not be available in the US market for customers.

However, there are further modifications in store for BMW cars in the spring of 2024. The company will include its highly anticipated Highway Aid feature in a range of new models as an element of its Driving Assistance Professional Package. This innovative function enables drivers to effortlessly change lanes with just a quick glance. By proposing a lane change, the vehicle prompts the driver to confirm their intention by directing their line of sight towards the relevant side mirror.

The Active Lane Change technology allows for a secure execution of the maneuver, adding more convenience to BMW cars.

Beginning in March 2024, the all-electric iX will now come equipped with Highway Assistant, and the X5, X6, and X7 SUVs will also have this feature available starting in April 2024. However, it is interesting to note that the X5 M Competition and X6 M Competition will not be included in this update.

The new BMW Operating System 9 (OS9) will introduce enhanced smartphone integration for vehicles, a first for the brand. By utilizing this feature, drivers can easily access the iPhone’s voice assistant, Siri, through voice control without the need to press any buttons on the steering wheel. Additionally, the cloud-based navigation system will now display detailed information about charging stations, complete with images and a user-friendly zero to five-star rating system.

BMW vehicles equipped with operating systems 8, 8.5, or 9 will now be able to enjoy the Digital Key Plus function. Additionally, the navigation system has undergone updates to enhance its user-friendliness, along with other enhancements.
