Porsche’s Macan EV Falls Short of Targeting Tesla’s Model Y, Yet Shares Many Surprising Traits

Porsche has recently revealed its highly anticipated electric model, the Macan EV, which is likely to be a top-selling vehicle for the brand. This new electric version follows in the footsteps of the gasoline-powered Macan, which has been the most sought-after Porsche model for almost ten years, with over 800,000 units sold since its debut. With the introduction of the Macan EV, it seems that Porsche is embarking on an exciting journey towards electrification.

Despite its impressive technology, sleek appearance, prestigious brand name, and strong performance, the Porsche may face competition from a well-established competitor: the Tesla Model Y. Although both vehicles are similar in size, the Model Y comes at a significantly lower price point. Additionally, the Porsche boasts a slightly larger size and battery capacity, and based on its reputation, we can assume it will exude a sense of luxury and superior quality.

Nevertheless, the Tesla remains a highly desirable option for potential purchasers of the Macan EV. To truly distinguish these two electric crossovers in terms of performance and price, let’s delve deeper into their respective features and specifications.

Despite Porsche’s lack of announcement regarding a single-motor, rear-wheel drive option for the Macan EV with a smaller battery pack, we will focus on their comparable big-battery versions: the Tesla Model Y Long Range and Performance.

Porsche has recently revealed details about the battery options available for their highly anticipated Macan EV. Only one option has been announced thus far, a 100-kWh pack with a usable capacity of 95 kWh. While there are currently no official EPA range estimates for the U.S. market, it is expected that the Macan EV will be able to travel over 300 miles on one full charge, surpassing the range of its sibling model, the Taycan.

The European WLTP range ratings, which have been released recently, present a more positive outlook as they show higher numbers than previously reported. The Macan 4 boasts an impressive range of up to 380 miles, while the Macan Turbo follows closely behind with a range of 367 miles.

Tesla presents two options for the Model Y, both equipped with a substantial 82 kWh battery (75 kWh available capacity): the Long Range option boasts an EPA range of 310 miles, while the Performance version offers 285 miles. In accordance with the WLTP test utilized in Europe, the Model Y Long Range is capable of traveling up to 331 miles on a single charge, whereas the Performance variant falls slightly behind at a maximum of 319 miles.

The Macan EV underwent a pre-production phase and successfully completed a range test at 70 mph, surpassing 300 miles.

In terms of WLTP ratings, the Porsche appears to have an advantage with its larger battery capacity. However, when it comes to real-world performance, the gap between the two may not be as significant as initially thought. The Tesla boasts a lighter weight and better aerodynamics, granting it the ability to maximize its lower kilowatt hour capacity.

The Macan EV marks the debut of the first Volkswagen Group car constructed on the fresh PPE specialized electric framework. This acronym represents Premium Platform Electric, and it is set to be utilized by other brands within the group such as Audi, who plans to apply it to their upcoming Q6 electric crossover.

The PPE platform, which will also be used for the upcoming Audi Q6 E-Tron and other future models, features an advanced 800-volt electrical system that enables incredibly fast charging for electric vehicles. Porsche boasts that the Macan can be charged at a rate of up to 270 kW, meaning it can go from 10 to 80 percent battery in just 22 minutes or gain 60 miles of range in only 4 minutes.

Tesla has outfitted their Model Y with a 400-volt battery pack, meaning it requires a significantly higher amount of amperage than the Porsche in order to achieve extremely fast charging speeds. Despite this, at 400 volts, the Model Y is still capable of reaching a maximum charging rate of 210 kW, which translates to approximately 200 miles of range added in just 15 minutes. While it may not match the rapidity of an 800-volt vehicle such as the Macan EV, it certainly comes close.

The Porsche Macan EV may not be marketed as a direct competitor to the Tesla Model Y, but its size is very similar. Despite not being positioned as a direct adversary to the Tesla Model Y, the Porsche Macan EV shares almost identical dimensions with its counterpart.

The Macan has a length of 4,784 mm (188.34 inches), a wheelbase of 2,893 mm (113.9 inches), and a total width, including mirrors, of 2,152 mm (84.7 inches). In comparison, the Model Y’s total length is 4,751 mm (187 inches), its wheelbase is 2,890 mm (113.8 inches), and its width with mirrors is 2,129 mm (83.8 inches). At first glance, it may seem that Porsche aimed to copy these measurements for the Macan.

The two cars are nearly the same in terms of height, with the Macan measuring 2 mm shorter than the Model Y at a total height of 1,622 mm. The Porsche boasts slightly superior distance from the ground and can be modified in models that have the additional air suspension feature.

Despite their similar size and dimensions, the Porsche and Tesla have a significant difference in weight. While the base Macan 4 weighs 5,136 pounds according to the manufacturer, both versions of the Model Y are under 2 tons and do not exceed 4,400 pounds. This indicates a noticeable increase in weight for the Porsche compared to the Tesla.

In terms of practicality, these two automobiles appear to be evenly balanced with similar amounts of storage space. They both have a front trunk (or “frunk”), but the Tesla has a greater capacity overall, boasting 4.1 cubic feet (117 liters) in the front and an impressive 30.2 cubic feet (854 liters) in the back. Furthermore, when the rear seats are folded down, the space increases even more to an exceptional 72.1 cubic feet (2,041 liters), which surpasses any other vehicles in its category.

The front trunk of the Macan EV is more compact, holding up to 3 cubic feet (84 liters), compared to its 19-cubic-foot (540-liter) trunk. As a result, it falls short in terms of convenience when compared to Tesla, especially as the Model Y offers a seven-seater option, though only suitable for kids in its third row.

The Macan EV from Porsche is exclusively available with a four-wheel drive and double-motor setup. The entry-level model, Macan 4, boasts a combined power of 402 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. It can reach 62 mph (100 km/h) from a complete stop in just 5.2 seconds and continues to accelerate up to 137 mph. The highest-tier version, Macan Turbo, elevates the figures even further to an impressive 630 horsepower and a staggering 833 pound-feet of torque, allowing it to go from zero to 62 mph in a mere 3.3 seconds and achieve a maximum speed of 161 mph.

The figures are slightly improved compared to the Model Y, which features a Long Range version equipped with two motors, producing 384 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque. This combination claims to reach 60 mph in 4.8 seconds, though third-party tests have revealed it to be even faster.

The Model Y Performance increases the power to 456 horsepower and 497 pound-feet of torque, enabling the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in an approximate time of 3.5 seconds.

The maximum velocity of the Tesla Model Y varies depending on the version, with the Long Range reaching 135 mph and the Performance achieving an impressive 155 mph.

Please note that the following analysis focuses on the acceleration times from 0 to 60 and 0 to 62 mph, as Porsche has currently only disclosed sprint times up to 100 km/h. However, specific figures for the US market will be revealed closer to the vehicle’s official American launch in the latter part of 2024.

When examining the statistics, it becomes apparent that the Model Y provides great value for its price. The Long Range variant outperforms the Macan 4 in acceleration and comes very close to matching its maximum speed. While the Model Y Performance falls short of the Macan Turbo’s acceleration time (which we suspect may be even faster with high-grip tires and ideal weather conditions), the difference is minimal.

While we haven’t had the opportunity to test drive the Macan EV, we have high expectations given Porsche’s renowned reputation. On the other hand, the Model Y has built a name for its nimble maneuvering and ability to conceal its bulk and dimensions. In a direct comparison on a track, we may be pleasantly surprised by the results, as the Tesla is likely to offer solid performance and an enjoyable driving experience. It will be interesting to see how it holds up in terms of lap times and overall enjoyment on the road.

The Macan comes equipped with air suspension, a luxurious feature commonly found in high-end vehicles. This addition not only enhances the overall comfort of the car, but also gives the driver the ability to adjust the ride height as needed. This function enables the car to lower itself for increased efficiency, while also providing optimal ground clearance for off-road adventures.

A prominent attribute found in upscale and spacious vehicles is the implementation of rear-wheel steering, an option available for $2,040 on the Macan EV, marking the first time this feature has been offered for the Macan brand. This advanced technology allows the Macan EV’s rear wheels to turn at a maximum angle of 5 degrees, resulting in a reduced turning radius from 39.6 feet to 36.4 feet. Not only does this contribute to improved stability and maneuverability for the vehicle at lower speeds, but it also enhances its performance in sharp turns at higher speeds by syncing the rear wheels with the front wheels.

The Macan EV offers the option of equipping up to three front screens, one of which is a curved display functioning as a digital gauge cluster. In contrast, the Model Y only provides a single infotainment screen in the center and does not offer the ability to add more screens. Additionally, an augmented reality head-up display can be chosen for the Macan EV, which allows for navigation and other important data to be projected directly onto the windscreen.

The Model Y lacks these functionalities, however it possesses its own unique capabilities. The standout feature is the Autopilot system (along with the option to join the Full Self-Driving Beta program, providing access to additional advanced autonomous driving features), in addition to a network of cameras surrounding the car. Adding in the typical options that buyers choose, the cost for the Macan 4 can easily exceed $100,000, while the Turbo’s price can soar beyond $130,000 if you opt for numerous additional features – it could even hit $160,000. Unlike the Tesla, leasing is the only way to potentially receive any tax breaks on the Macan.

The base price for the Tesla Model Y Long Range is significantly lower at $48,990. Opting for a different color other than the standard Stealth Grey will result in an additional fee of either $1,000 or $2,000, depending on the chosen finish. The optional 20-inch Induction wheels come at an extra cost of $2,000 and the inclusion of a tow hitch requires an added payment of $1,000, which is the same price as the sleek white interior.

For an additional $3,000, you can opt for the seven-seater version, but if you want the Full Self-Driving capability, you’ll need to shell out a whopping $12,000. If you choose all the available options, a fully-equipped Model Y Long Range will come in just under $70,000. The Model Y Performance offers most of the same options, except for the standard Überturbine 21-inch wheels and third row of seats. Starting at $52,490, the Model Y Performance can also be fully-loaded for slightly over $70,000.

The difference in cost is significant, and this is not even taking into account the $7,500 federal tax credit that the Tesla may receive in 2024. The affordability of the Tesla, as well as its combination of features, may attract potential buyers of the Macan EV.
