Software is a highly effective instrument. When used skillfully, it can result in significantly increased power with minimal exertion. A modest $1,200 reprogramming of the 2017 Audi RS3 resulted in an additional 100 horsepower and faster gear changes, nearly matching the performance of its larger, pricier counterpart, the RS7 Performance.
The small Audi has been upgraded to generate 500 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque from its turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-five engine. This represents a significant boost from the original 400 hp it offered, although it still falls short of the RS7’s power output. The RS7 features an unmodified twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 engine that delivers a remarkable 630 hp and 626 lb-ft of torque.
Both vehicles are equipped with all-wheel drive, although they utilize distinct systems. The RS3 features a transversely positioned engine, whereas the RS7’s engine is longitudinally placed. Additionally, the RS7 weighs 1,223 pounds more, which evens out the competition between the two Audi models.
After the RS7 took the lead in the initial drag race, the RS3 emerged victorious in the following one. This led to a final race where the RS7 solidified its place as the ultimate champion … albeit with a slight advantage. The larger Audi finished the quarter-mile race in 11.3 seconds, closely followed by the modified RS3 with a time of 11.5 seconds.
Countless lines of code are responsible for ensuring that various functions in a vehicle, such as the infotainment system and fuel delivery, operate efficiently. By updating this code, one can access further advantages. While the cost of $1,200 may seem high, it provides a simple method to enhance a car’s performance without having to physically alter the vehicle by installing new hardware.
