Ever since Ford unveiled the Mustang in 1964, the iconic pony car has relied on a rear-wheel-drive set up. However, No Production Value Garage has broken with convention to install an all-wheel-drive system into a 2017 Ford Mustang S550 generation, within their Project Traction initiative.

The constructor applied components from alternate versions to make the AWD conversion, utilizing elements like the Jeep Grand Cherokee CV joint and a jackshaft from a Jeep Commander. Also, a drivetrain derived from a Toyota was secured, alongside a Syvecs all-wheel drive controller, ExtremeContact Sport tires, and an Endlink set from German Racing Parts. His welding techniques were pushed to the limit in order to seamlessly fix up all the components.

Though that is a problem, it’s not the only obstacle. Initially, the Mustang didn’t have AWD in its construction. For this reason, components already situated beneath the car had the potential of clashing with the supplemental axle designed to turn the forward wheels. To illustrate, the catalytic converter had to be cut down for it not to come into contact with the spindleshaft.

Ford engineering a prototype of an all-wheel drive Mustang back in 1965, but never brought it to production. Dodge is the only competitor that has produced an AWD version of its iconic muscle car, the Challenger, from 2017 up until just last December 22nd. The Mustang continues its run as part of the new S650 generation despite this turn of events.

During the trial for fine-tuning the All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system, the developer observed that everything proceeded according to plan. There wasn’t any sign of torque steer, showing that the driveshaft was put together with efficacy. Introducing the AWD unit only added slightly more than 200 lbs, amounting to a total of 3,915 pounds.

The aim is to substitute the existing axles for 4140 units. Moreover, the builder might install a supercharger whilst they are at it; this would give the 5.0-liter Coyote motor of theirs a lift in power output, around the 435 horsepower mark. After all, their intention was always to intensify the energy of their car.
