Vaughn Gittin Jr. Back to Racing After Year Away
This summer, Ford Mustang’s seventh iteration arrives to dealerships around the country, with a line of new, Mustang-inspired race cars accompanying it. Among them stands the Mustang RTR Spec 5-FD, befitting its Formula Drift abbreviation “FD.” This four-wheeled equine is made for sideways sliding.
Crafted alongside Ford and RTR Vehicles, the fresh competition Mustang is ready for the 2023 Formula Drift Season. As demonstrated in the photos, it’s not just an ordinary Mustang with a flashy paint job. Underneath the hood lies an engine that produces over 1300 horsepower, sure to provide some spectacular smoke from the wheels! The suspension has been fine-tuned to endure the hardships of drifting, and the steering has been adjusted drastically to enable drivers to keep their balance at extreme angles.
Discoursing on chauffeurs, Ford driver and twice Winning Formula Drift title-holder Vaughn Gittin Jr. reverts to the tourney after taking a hiatus for a year. He is among the RTR Vehicles’ Skid Patrol that will enter three motors into the competition.
“I’m delighted to confirm that I will be back in the driver’s seat of a Mustang RTR with its signature aggressive styling and powerful performance updates,” declared Gittin. “Ford and RTR have worked hard to create something special with the new electronic drift brake. Chelsea [DeNofa] and I had the privilege of collaborating with the dedicated engineering team at Ford to make our goal of bringing larger smiles to the faces of future seventh-generation Mustang owners a reality.”
Gittin Jr.’s ride isn’t what has him so excited, but the fresh electronic drift brake that is available as an add-on on road-going vehicles. Available with a 2.3L EcoBoost or the 486 HP 5.0L GT with either auto or manual transmission, this e-brake offers three times the stopping power of a regular handbrake. The brake system can be adjusted to suit users of any skill level; rookies can learn proper drifting techniques, while those with more experience are catered to with enhanced features – but only when used in a closed circuit.
“Mustang has always been symbolized by on-road liberty and circuit performance,” stated Jim Owens, Ford Mustang brand manager. “Mustang’s inaugural electronic drift brake brings a completely new aspect of fun and aptitude to the track which will let almost anyone drift as if they were soon to be Vaughn Gittin Jr.”
