Honda Launches Innovative AWD Hybrid Minivan with Remarkably Low Cargo Space

For a large number of individuals, choosing a crossover as the go-to family vehicle has become quite common. Nevertheless, not everyone has embraced the SUV trend and still favors the traditional minivan. In Japan, Honda is targeting the MPV enthusiasts with the introduction of the new Freed. This model is positioned below the significantly larger Odyssey available in the United States.

The Freed is definitely a top choice when it comes to transporting goods. One notable feature is its remarkably low height for loading and unloading items with ease. The distance from the ground to the cargo floor is just 13.1 inches, which is significantly lower than the Odyssey’s 24.75 inches. This design not only facilitates loading but also accommodates a ramp for wheelchair accessibility.

The incline is featured in multiple photos unveiled by Honda Access, a branch that provides authorized accessories. This feature is crucial due to Japan’s increasing number of elderly citizens. According to the United Nations, Japan boasts the highest percentage of elderly individuals globally, with over a tenth of the population now being 80 years old or above.

Different Honda JDM minivans like the N-WGN and Step WGN have also been modified to make room for a wheelchair. The Freed can also be equipped with a front passenger seat that swings out, making it simpler for individuals with disabilities to get in.

The Freed is a fascinating minivan for various reasons, as Honda has packed in six seats, all-wheel drive, and a hybrid engine into a compact design. With a length of just 169.6 inches, it is notably shorter than the Odyssey by 33.6 inches. Additionally, it can be purchased with only five seats and front-wheel drive, excluding the hybrid components.

The regular Freed Air will be available for purchase alongside the Freed Crosstar, which incorporates crossover elements such as plastic body cladding. With features like a collapsible center table and an interior roof rack, the Freed can be likened to a versatile tool like a Swiss army knife but for minivans. Despite its compact size, it offers a lot of functionality, proving that owning a fuel-consuming, large SUV is not always necessary.

Complete technical details will be revealed later this year when the 2024 Honda Freed is released for sale in Japan.
