Introducing the Electric Fusilier: A Sibling of the Grenadier and Quartermaster with Extended Range Option
INEOS Automotive, a British car manufacturer owned by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, is making great strides in the industry. In just over a year since launching its Grenadier off-roader, the company has announced its third model line. This latest vehicle, named the INEOS Fusilier, marks a significant shift from the brand’s previous 4×4 models as it boasts both electric car capabilities and impressive performance on both paved and rugged terrains.
The INEOS Fusilier is the latest addition to the company’s 2022 promise of a zero-emission model range. Remaining committed to their mission of providing simplistic and functional 4×4 vehicles, the Fusilier joins the INEOS Grenadier, inspired by the iconic Land Rover Defender.
INEOS Automotive is proud to present the Fusilier, a vehicle that boasts top-tier off-road capabilities while maintaining exceptional on-road performance. Yet, it embodies more than just being the next addition to the Grenadier and recently released Quartermaster models. The Fusilier from INEOS Automotive boasts unparalleled off-road proficiency, without compromising on its performance on regular roads. It not only adds to the existing line of vehicles, but also brings something unique to the table, in comparison with the Grenadier and the newly introduced Quartermaster.
At first sight, the Fusilier may seem like a downsized edition of the Grenadier. It is undoubtedly a shorter and more compact vehicle compared to its counterpart. The two 4×4 models do have some resemblances in terms of design, particularly at the front. However, INEOS Automotive has derived the DNA of the Fusilier from its bigger sibling, incorporating modern elements and giving it a distinctive character.
The Fusilier boasts prominent design elements inherited from its predecessors, the Grenadier and Quartermaster. These include both front and rear lighting consisting of circular, seven-inch all-LED fixtures, a visible B-pillar located between the doors, and a roof structure strengthened in four different directions.
INEOS Automotive made the decision to depart from using the same ladder-frame infrastructure for their Fusilier model as seen in their Grenadier and Quartermaster vehicles. Instead, the Fusilier boasts a unique skateboard platform with sturdy steel components and underbody, in addition to lightweight aluminum doors and closures. Despite this change, the Fusilier remains committed to delivering formidable off-roading capabilities like its predecessor, the Grenadier.
Choosing a skateboard platform as the foundation for the Fusilier makes perfect sense, given that it is a battery-operated electric vehicle (BEV), in contrast to its predecessors. While INEOS Automotive has not disclosed the Fusilier’s battery size or range, Ratcliffe noted that BEVs are best suited for shorter journeys and city deliveries. This hints that the Fusilier may not possess the typical range found in vehicles powered by traditional engines, like the Grenadier and Quartermaster.
In order to satisfy the expectations of customers, INEOS Automotive is working on a range extender variant for the Fusilier. As stated by the company, this particular version of the Fusilier will be equipped with a small gas engine that functions as a generator. This set-up enables the vehicle to preserve its battery charge and cover longer distances, even in regions lacking charging infrastructure.
INEOS Automotive is in the process of creating the Fusilier alongside renowned automotive supplier and private contract manufacturer, Magna Steyr. To ensure its success, the Fusilier will undergo extensive testing on Austria’s Schöckl mountain, located near Magna Steyr’s state-of-the-art production facility in Graz. This marks a crucial step in the development of the new INEOS 4×4 vehicle.
Magna Steyr operates its production plant in Graz, Austria where it manufactures the Fisker Ocean and the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. The company has also secured a contract to construct the Fusilier at this location. In fall 2024, INEOS Automotive intends to unveil the technological specifications of the Fusilier, including its range-extender model, as well as announce the release dates.
