Mercedes-Benz: No Concept of Future Luxury?

Hyperscreen 2.0: More Dashboard Coverage

Mercedes-Benz has just recently revealed a premonition of the insides of a car of the near future prior to its full exposé at CES 2024. This edition of the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) will be incorporated with new and breakthrough Artificial Intelligence abilities.

Mercedes has announced that its ‘Hey Mercedes’ voice assistant will be showcased on a full-width dashboard display that turns the dash into a giant touchscreen. This new graphic interface, created with Unity game-engine graphics, is said to take the assistant “into a whole new visual dimension”. Mercedes refers to this interface as an “expressive new face to the customer with natural interaction” and will soon be featured in a variety of upcoming models, such as the new CLA-Class. Additionally, the Concept CLA Class will be on display to further demonstrate the capabilities of this new technology.

The contemporary design of the dash reinforces our skepticism that Mercedes is beginning to lose its grip over the appreciation for luxury. Luxuriousness isn’t just about cramming a large display into the most constrained area, only for it to become archaic after several years; rather, constructing an internal decor which endures and remains elegant for many decades. But Mercedes deems artificial intelligence as the destined outcome.

“Mercedes-Benz is revolutionizing the digital passenger experience through the utilization of AI to give a human-like connection with the smart MBUX Virtual Assistant,” states Ola Kallenius, CEO of Mercedes-Benz. “It has empathetic features that are in tune with your driving style and emotion. When combined with our MB.OS architecture, this strategy will shape the future of digital luxury.”

At CES, Mercedes-Benz will be displaying “exciting developments in the field of in-car entertainment, including a first-of-its-kind partnership” in addition to the new interior concept and Concept CLA. However, the most intriguing prospect is the potential to get up close with the upcoming electric G-Class – likely to be dubbed the Mercedes EQG – which will be presented in camouflaged prototype form prior to its expected reveal in the near future.

Next year, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) of 2024 is scheduled for the days between 9 and 13 January in Las Vegas. Supposedly, a plethora of carmakers will be present, displaying five of Kia’s commercial cars, as well as a Honda electric vehicle that reminds one of the iconic Cybertruck.

Although not each auto producer will be participating, Stellantis chose to forgo the happening due to a stoppage of activity led by the UAW against them this year.
