Michelin and Pirelli: Luxury vs Passenger Cars

J.D. Power compiles customer satisfaction and quality information on various products and industries. They are typically associated with appraising flagship car models; however, they also rate particular aspects, such as tires. This week their 2023 review has been published, and Michelin and Pirelli once more achieved first-place rankings in the aggregate.

The 2023 J.D. Power US Original Equipment Tire Customer Satisfaction Survey gauges owner satisfaction calculated from ratings for tire running, tire deterioration, road-holding and control, as well as looks. It is divided into car categories, including luxury cars, passenger autos, performance sports and vehicle or SUV. Generally, customer fulfillment with original equipment tires rose by five points this year to an average of 799 out of a maximum 1,000-point mark.

Consumer satisfaction with electric vehicle tires soared by a whopping 62 points, a record-breaking increase. This notable climb can be attributed to the focus the industry put on such aspects as minimal vibration and noise reduction while driving, elucidated Ashley Edgar, J.D. Power’s Senior Director of Benchmarking. She went on to emphasize how it is imperative for both automakers and tire companies to come together in order to perfect these elements since they have a large influence on electric vehicle efficiency and contentment with its tires.

Recent reports demonstrate that Michelin and Pirelli maintain their position at the peak of different vehicular markets. Michelin managed to rack up 833 points out of 1000, earning them 1st place for a milestone 20th year in the extravagant segment. Next was Goodyear with 818 points, followed by Bridgestone at 801, and Continental with 798. Moreover, Michelin tires are the standard feature on many prominent electric vehicles from automotive makers such as Tesla, BMW, Ford, Nissan, Polestar, and Porsche.

In the realm of automobiles, Pirelli stands as the indisputable leader with a tremendous score of 828, followed by Michelin at 827 and BFGoodrich closely behind them at 825. Not only is Pirelli the most preferred supplier for premium brands such as Aston Martin, Bentley, Ferrari, Porsche, but now also for Lucid Air. Additionally, it is solely responsible for all the tires used in Formula One racing.

On the basis of feedback from 32,151 proprietors of cars manufactured in 2021 and 2022, the J.D. Power U.S. Original Equipment Tire Customer Satisfaction Survey was conducted between August and December 2022.
