Porsche 911 Carrera GTS on Autobahn: Top Speed of 193 mph Proven
The Porsche 911 Carrera GTS often goes unnoticed in the world of 911s, where Turbos and GT3s dominate the headlines. However, this should not be the case. Sporting impressive dynamics, attractive aesthetics, and a twin-turbo flat-six engine producing 473 horsepower, it is undoubtedly one of the top performance vehicles on offer today. Based on a recent video from Germany, it appears effortless to achieve speeds close to 200 mph while behind the wheel of a GTS.
AutoTopNL recently had the opportunity to test drive a brand new 911 Carrera GTS. They wasted no time hitting the Autobahn, Germany’s renowned stretch of highway with no speed limit, to put the mid-range coupe’s speed to the test.The team at AutoTopNL was fortunate enough to receive a new 911 Carrera GTS for testing purposes. Without delay, they headed to the Autobahn – Germany’s famous highway where speed limits are often non-existent – to push the limits of this powerful mid-range coupe.After receiving a new 911 Carrera GTS for evaluation, the folks at AutoTopNL made a beeline for the Autobahn. This legendary German highway, known for its lack of speed restrictions, was the perfect location to see just how fast this impressive mid-range coupe could go.
The driver easily surpasses the mark of 300 kph (186 mph) in a swift manner, reaching just shy of the GTS’s advertised maximum velocity of 312 kph (193 mph). However, their foot is not lifted due to the car’s inability to go any faster, but rather due to upcoming traffic. We firmly believe that this 911 could have easily exceeded its declared top speed if it had been granted more space.
This specific GTS model comes with the optional Lightweight package from Porsche. This includes lightweight bucket seats, slimmer and lighter windows, less sound insulation, rear-wheel steering, and a redesigned aerodynamic system, resulting in a reduction of 55 pounds in overall weight. Although this may seem like a small amount, it potentially could have had an impact on the increased power seen in the footage.
It should be mentioned that on both occasions where we witness the 911 GTS cresting the 300-kph milestone, it was in sixth gear and not eighth. This showcases the functionality of Porsche’s PDK dual-clutch transmission’s seventh and eighth gears as overdrive gears, primarily designed for better fuel efficiency rather than enhanced performance. This footage serves as evidence that sixth gear is all you’ll ever need on a racetrack.
