Spun Bearings Discovered in Nissan Titan Diesel Engine After Only 40K Miles

Numerous significant issues commonly arise after a car has surpassed 100,000 miles, but for one individual who owns a 2018 Nissan Titan XD, an unexpected repair is looming with only 40,000 miles logged on the odometer. The situation is aggravated by the fact that the truck may need a new engine block.

During a dismantling process at Dave’s Auto Center in Utah, a 5.0-liter V8 Cummins diesel engine shows its true condition. The entire procedure was recorded and posted on YouTube by the center. A brief test exposes a significant leakage of oil from the rear, suggesting that the rear main seal may be damaged.

As per the proprietor, the noise of the Titan’s motor became increasingly intense until it finally sputtered to a halt by the side of the highway. However, there were no other indications of trouble leading up to this incident. No warning lights for engine issues, low oil pressure, or overheating were visible.

Unfortunately, in spite of everything, something went drastically amiss. The presence of debris in the oil filter, as well as the oil and oil pan, stands as clear evidence of a catastrophic breakdown. Further inspection of the engine confirmed numerous spun main bearings and extensive overall harm. The crankshaft journals have been scratched, necessitating the replacement of the bearing caps.

Broken bearings are among the most catastrophic malfunctions, with the potential to completely destroy an engine within seconds. Such occurrences do not simply materialize out of the blue. Rather, they typically result from a decline in oil pressure, resulting in direct contact between the bearings and journals, causing heightened levels of friction and heat that ultimately result in harm and the eventual breakdown of the engine.

Unfortunately, it appears that the engine block of the Titan is beyond repair. While it may be feasible to fix it, purchasing a new block would most likely be a wiser decision. However, neither option will come at a low cost. Nissan offers a new block for $23,000, and this does not cover the expense of labor for reinstallation into the pickup truck.
