Formula E-inspired faux engine noise adds authenticity to driving experience.
UPDATE: In response to Motor1’s inquiry, Nissan addressed the possibility of bringing the Ariya Nismo model to the United States, stating that it will not be happening in the near future. The company stated, “We are currently at a pivotal point in our electrification efforts in this region and we are continuously working towards providing our customers with top-quality products and experiences. At this time, the Ariya Nismo will only be released in Japan and we have no further updates about its introduction to other markets.”
After launching the GT-R, Z, and Japan-exclusive Skyline, Nissan has unveiled its fourth Nismo vehicle, but this time with a major change – the elimination of the internal combustion engine. The all-new Nissan Ariya Nismo made its grand entrance at the 2024 Tokyo Auto Salon, and it’s not just a mere display piece; the upgraded body design is also paired with a notable increase in power.
Nissan is preparing to release the Ariya Nismo in Japan with two different options. The standard model has a total of 362 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, which is produced by two electric motors that use a 66-kilowatt-hour battery. For those seeking more power, there is a stronger version available with 430 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque, thanks to a larger 91-kilowatt-hour battery.
As an electric sport utility vehicle, the Ariya Nismo is not particularly lightweight. Its lightest version weighs in at 4,587 pounds, while the heaviest configuration can reach a hefty 4,894 lbs. Surprisingly, Nissan has not released any information regarding its performance. However, it is reasonable to speculate that the 430-hp option will have a faster acceleration time to 60 mph than its predecessor, which boasted 389 hp and completed the sprint in 4.8 seconds while also boasting 443 lb-ft of torque.
Nissan has recently announced their plans to introduce the JDM-spec Ariya in a Nismo variant, equipped with new 20-inch wheels that boast a “highly rigid” build. These wheels will be paired with custom 255/45 R20 tires on both the front and rear axles. The renowned Japanese brand guarantees improved handling and increased speeds while taking corners. Furthermore, drivers can now access a dedicated Nismo driving mode, which offers a quicker throttle response. For those seeking an enhanced driving experience, this mode can be accompanied by an artificial soundtrack inspired by the sounds of Formula E.
Following in the footsteps of popular electric cars like the Kia EV6 GT and Hyundai Ioniq 5 N (although with significantly less horsepower), the Nissan Ariya Nismo is equipped with subtle modifications to its interior, including thicker front seats, red highlights, and distinct Nismo branding.
The Ariya, the highly-anticipated flagship model, is set to hit the Japanese market in the upcoming spring season. In light of this, we have contacted Nissan to inquire whether this dynamic electric vehicle will make its way to the United States.
