US EV Network Ionna Takes on Tesla, Shaking Up the Charging Industry

Ionna’s goal: 30,000 charging stations across US and Canada

Ionna recently revealed its plans to launch an electric vehicle charging network in North America, after gaining the necessary approvals from regulatory bodies.

Ionna is a collaboration between seven top car manufacturers, specifically BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis. Their mission is to compete with the Tesla Supercharger network by providing electric vehicle (EV) owners with DC fast-charging stations. These stations are fueled by renewable energy, making them a sustainable option for charging.

Ionna is launching innovative charging stations that will readily support Tesla’s NACS (North American Charging Standard), a popular type of connector that is gaining traction among various automakers, including Toyota. Moreover, electric vehicles equipped with CCS (Combined Charging System) connectors can also recharge at Ionna’s facilities.

Electric vehicles (EVs) from manufacturers other than the seven mentioned car brands, including the popular Tesla Model 3, are also eligible for Ionna’s services. Under this program, clients will have access to a variety of amenities, such as restroom facilities, food options, and retail outlets, at participating locations within the company’s network. To clarify, Ionna’s services cater to EVs not only from the seven specified car companies but also those from other manufacturers like Tesla’s widely sought-after Model 3. This initiative offers valuable benefits to customers, who can conveniently enjoy amenities such as restrooms, dining services, and retail stores at various locations within Ionna’s network.

Automaker customers who participate can take advantage of Ionna’s functions and services being seamlessly integrated into their in-vehicle and in-app systems. These include features such as online reservations, route planning, and payment applications.

Tesla, a company based in Texas, is currently working on a Supercharger restaurant and drive-in cinema in Los Angeles.

Seth Cutler has been selected to assume the position of CEO at Ionna. He brings with him previous experience in leading companies within the electric mobility sector, such as EV Connect, Electrify America, and General Electric (GE).

Cutler expressed his gratitude for being chosen to lead Ionna and collaborate with renowned automakers to shape the future of electric mobility. He emphasized their mutual dedication to creating a comprehensive and powerful charging network, which reflects their shared goal of revolutionizing the entire EV charging experience and promoting widespread EV adoption.

Ionna has set a goal to establish a minimum of 30,000 charging stations across the US and Canada. The initial stations are projected to be up and running by the end of this year. Moreover, the company intends to become the top EV charging network in North America by the end of the decade.
