5-Year Perfect Pony Car Restoration

The inaugural Ford Mustang is widely deemed as the premier classic muscle car among enthusiasts. Although Veterans like the Shelby GT350 and GT500 usually acquire the majority of the limelight, Ford created a myriad of Mustangs that have earned their standing as authentic classics.

Whilst the Carroll Shelby-crafted models may be the more famed ones, Cobra Jet Mustangs remain among the most prized archetypal cars extant; and this impeccable exemplar makes that perfectly evident. The legacy of the Cobra Jet label has its origins in 1967, as Ford battled to be on par with Pontiac and Chevrolet who were doing their utmost to trump each other in terms of muscle car power outputs. By the end of ’67, both manufacturers had rolled out large V8 motors that produced more than 330 horsepower, leaving Ford in the lurch.

In 1968, Ford counteracted with their own 428 cubic inch large-scale V8 termed the 428 Cobra Jet. They mainly equipped this engine to the Mustang fastback in order to gain supremacy at the drag strip, manufacturing only 50 Mustang 428 Cobra Jets during that year.

The reported output of the 428 Cobra Jet V8 engine was originally estimated to produceto be around 335 hpand 440 lb-ft of torque. Nevertheless, depending on MotorTrend’s analysis, Ford allegedly underestimated the power rating forsafety measurements, and the powertrain was believed to deliver almost 400 hp.

The classic 1970 Mustang Mach 1 bears the moniker ‘R-code’, identifying that it is equipped with ram-air induction and flaunts a shaker hood. Ford bestowed the vehicle with a predominant 428 Cobra Jet V8, together with a close-ratio 4-speed top loader transmission, as well as a factory-standard 3.00 traction-loc rear axle.

This Mustang features power front disc brakes as well as strategic maneuvering with the power steering, amplifying the performance attributes of this Mach 1 to its fullest potential and keeping all the original OEM and corrected parts from the period. The proud proprietor also claims that each component of the car is accurate in terms of date-codes and part numbers and they also still utilize original manufacturing sheet metal.

Beautifully crafted in the iconic Grabber Orange hue, this Mustang is certainly one of a kind; with only 126 Mach 1s being completed with a close-ratio 4-speed transmission from the factory and the added bonus of Ford’s Evaporative Emission System, making it a truly priceless classic.

This vehicle has gone through extensive rehabilitation over the span of five years, and you can see why with the finished product. This pristine Ford Mustang is surely one of the most attractive around- in terms of original 1964-1970 Mach 1s, vintage pricing varies. While typically it would 81 cost around seventy grand, this particular specimen fetched an amazing one hundred thousand -a well-worth investment if you ask us.
