Compact Car Wins 2023 Japan COTY

The latest version of the Toyota Prius, which hit the market in late-2020, has met with a great deal of success; garnering accolade after accolade. The latest edition to its collection of acknowledgments is the 2021 Japan Car of the Year title.

The Prius managed to secure 360 ballots from the jury according to the terms of a newer voting system. This small-sized automobile trumped the BMW X1 (with 150 votes) and the Honda ZR-V (which accumulated 100). Its lacklustre reputation has been amply shed, as it continuously innovates following its pioneering launch of hybrid technology in the 90s and incredibly giving rise to a design that stirs admiration, like when it was up for nomination at Japan’s 2023 Great Design Grand Grant.

This year has been a momentous one for the all-new Toyota Prius which has gained countless honours and awards. Nominated for the 2024 North American Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle of the Year (NACTOY) Awards – with the victors to be declared on January 4 – it is listed in the Car of the Year section along with the Honda Accord and Hyundai Ioniq 6. On the international stage, it was selected as a finalist in the 2024 World Car of the Year grants.

The Toyota Prius was recently honored with the 2023 CarBuzz Save The Planet Award due to its remarkable hybrid powertrain that provides as much as 127 MPGe of fuel efficiency. This accolade underscores the Prius’ critical role in helping promote renewable energy sources and alleviate environmental issues.

The US pricing for the beginning version of a Prius is around $27,000. Then again, you can upgrade to the electrically plug-in hybrid version – the Prius Prime -if you’re willing to cough up $32,675. This adaptation packs in 44 miles of all-EV operation and offers an impressive 220 horsepower.

For the upcoming 2023 Japan Car of the Year, several contenders were in the running for various categories. BMW X1 gained the award for best Import Car of the Year, and Mitsubishi Delica Mini claimed Design Car of the Year. In addition, the Nissan Serena was honored with Technology Car of the Year owing to its modern e-Power system and Pro Pilot 2.0 driver assist furnishing. Toyota Alphard, Subaru Crosstrek, Abarth 500e, Maserati Grecale, and Volkswagen ID.4 were all also nominated as part of the top 10.
