2023 Prius Prime: Epic Electric Range

76% Increase: Impressive Math

Toyota recently unveiled their all-new 2023 Prius Prime plug-in hybrid, which can cover a staggering 444 miles in electric mode – an impressive jump of 76% compared to its predecessor. However, this figure is only valid for the SE trim model. When operating as a hybrid (gasoline 2.0-liter inline four engine paired with two motors) the eye-catching Prius Prime SE is anticipated to deliver an estimated 52 mpg combined efficiency. Unfortunately, Toyota has yet to provide figures for the XSE and XSE Premium trims when using electric power, but the combined score when running on gas was not included either.

At the end of last year, both the Prius Hybrid and the Prius Prime were introduced, however till lately, details regarding the latter had been scarce. In addition to those documented mileage measurements, Toyota has recently claimed that when it is running in Hybrid mode, the Prius Prime comes with a 13.6-kWh lithium-ion battery and motors producing extra force enabling swifter acceleration.

Boasting an approximately 220 hp and 139 lb-ft on tap, the Prius Prime is expected to reach 0-60 mph in a swift 6.6 seconds – a noteworthy 35% sprint than its predecessor’s hitherto lacklustre 10.2-second time. An additional 32% torque surge inevitably contributes to the car’s elevated pacing.

The SE comes equipped as standard with 17-inch matte gray alloy tires, an 8-inch touchscreen, and 6-way power leather seats with black and crimson accents. Even more features are included as part of the set-up, such as six USB-C outlets, a leather wrapped wheel, an electronic parking brake and rain detection window wipers.

Taking the jump to the XSE offers you all the amenities of the SE with the added bonuses of 19-inch larger wheels, an eight setting adjustable driver’s seat covered in SofTex cloth, smart key technology for its door handles and the boot, as well as charging without the use of cables. Some additional optional items include a 12.3-inch display, a rigid glass roof and a digital security token. At the top end of the XSE Premium stocks up an array of features, such as an enhanced JBL premium audio system consisting of 8 speakers, power liftback doors in the rear, as well as warmed and ventilated armchairs for the driver and passenger.

Consumers have the choice to select options such as the Panoramic View Monitor, heated rear seating, and Advanced Park technology. The latter is certainly exemplary, given its name implies it provides assistance to the motorist by controlling motion and braking while parking or performing parallel parking.

The Prius Prime gives drivers the option of opting in to a 185-watt solar roof designed to charge the drive battery while the vehicle is stationary. Choices of three driving modes (Normal, Eco and Sport) are available and the model currently only offers front-wheel-drive. If you’re looking for exterior colours, cutting edge, Guardian Gray, midnight black metallic and Reservoir Blue are all included as standard. For an additional $425, customers may opt for Windchill Pearl or Supersonic Red. Standard safety features include blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, road sign assist, and safe exit assist.

The newest innovation from Toyota is Traffic Jam Assist – an assistance system designed to provide a no-hassle driving experience, from acceleration to braking and even steering when functioning at speeds up to 25 mph under certain circumstances. To access this feature requires having a Drive Connect membership for which the XSE Premium version gives away one year of free use. And for other lower trim levels, Traffic Jam Assist can still be acquired, but only with specific components attached.

The SE will cost starting at $32,350, the XSE will set you back $35,600, and if you go for the XSE Premium, be prepared to pay $39,170 – without the $1,095 destination cost added in. The launch of the vehicle across the US is predicted to begin in the very near future.
