Aston formed a compact team of workers with the responsibility of test driving numerous vehicles and deciding which features should be controlled by physical buttons and switches. In an interview with the press, design director Miles Nurnburger revealed that the group came up with the concept of the “piss-off factor,” a standard used to gauge the frustration of having to search for a feature hidden in a menu that was not easily accessible on the screen.

According to Nurnburger, there are specific features that people desire to have immediately. He also mentioned that having to sift through menus to adjust temperature or volume can be frustrating for customers, ultimately impacting their overall experience.

Screens also pose a safety issue. They do not provide the same level of physical familiarity that individuals gain from driving a car on a daily basis, frequently resulting in longer periods of diverting one’s gaze away from the road while completing basic tasks. Furthermore, over-the-air updates that alter the display only add to this problem. Fortunately, regulators in the European Union are starting to recognize this issue.

Vehicles that are sold within the bloc and receive safety ratings from Euro NCAP may face deductions and potentially a lower score if they lack physical controls for crucial functions. However, this requirement does not extend to regulating volume or temperature control. The emphasis is instead placed on essential safety equipment such as the horn, turn signals, windshield wipers, and hazard lights.

Despite attempts by regulators, automakers may still be ahead of the game. In fact, Hyundai has taken a proactive step by incorporating buttons to the Ioniq 5, while Lucid has heeded customer feedback and kept certain physical controls in their design. Meanwhile, Volkswagen acknowledged its inadequate cabin design and made a promise to rectify the issue. Another automaker, BMW, also opted to stick with traditional physical seat controls on the door in their Neue Klasse cabin.

In just a few short years, the 2025 Vantage boasts a well-crafted interior overflowing with conveniently located buttons, neatly arranged within a stunning instrument panel stack positioned below a sleek and sophisticated infotainment display.
