BMW remains committed to the traditional manual gearbox and plans to offer it in a wider range of its vehicles for the current year. The 2025 Z4 M40i can now be purchased with a six-speed stick for $70,945 (including the $995 destination fee), which is $3,500 above the cost of the automatic version and nearly $15,000 more than the manual Toyota Supra.
BMW created the manual Z4 M40i with the code name Handschalter, which means “hand shift” in German. As previously reported, the six-speed manual is designed specifically for this engine and includes changes to the gear set and shafts. Additionally, the shift lever, its guide, and the connection to the transmission have all been revised. The aim of these modifications is to provide drivers with a sense of precise mechanical connection to the drivetrain.
Choosing the six-speed manual option provides a thrilling upgrade to the Z4’s performance. This package consists of distinct supplementary springs for the front and rear, as well as a reinforced clamp for the anti-roll bar in the front. Software modifications have also been made to enhance the variable-ratio steering system, traction control, M Sport differential, and rear suspension dampers, resulting in a more precise and responsive driving experience compared to the automatic counterpart. The wheels on the manual version are larger, measuring 19×9 inches at the front and 20×10 inches at the back, a significant improvement from the automatic’s wheel size of 18×9 inches at the front and 18×10 inches at the rear.
The forceful 3.0-liter inline-six with turbocharge produces an identical amount of 382 strength, peaking between 5,800 and 6,500 rotations per minute, and 369 pound-feet of torque, attainable from 1,800 to 5,000 rotations per minute. The Z4 M40i equipped with a six-speed manual transmission accelerates to 60 miles per hour in 4.2 seconds, slightly behind the eight-speed automatic’s time of 3.9 seconds. Maximum velocity for both versions is electronically capped at 155 miles per hour.
There are some visual modifications that can assist in distinguishing the manual version of the Z4. The convertible is equipped with BMW’s Shadowline trim as a standard feature, which incorporates black detailing on the side mirrors, emblems, and back fender pieces. Furthermore, the brake calipers are painted in a vibrant red hue. In addition, there are two unique shades available solely for this model: San Remo Green metallic and BMW Individual Frozen Deep Green metallic, priced at $2,950.
Within the interior, there is a selection of five different shades of Vernasca leather upholstery. The manual version of the Z4 offers a distinct cabin design featuring Cognac brown leather hides with black piping and sleek high-gloss trim accents.
It is important to mention that the manual version of the Z4 comes at a cost of $14,450 more than the six-speed Supra priced at $56,495. These two cars share a great deal of their structure, interior features, and engine setup. While it can be assumed that they offer unique driving experiences, the significant increase in price for a convertible top may seem excessive.
The manufacturing of the manual transmission Z4 is scheduled to commence in March, as stated by a representative from BMW. Customers can expect their deliveries to begin during the late spring or early summer, according to Motor1’s report.
