Scout Motors CEO Scott Keogh has revealed that their upcoming model, which is set to rival the Rivian R1T, will have a unique design featuring “hard angles and corners” instead of the usual smooth and sleek bodies seen in other contemporary vehicles. Keogh explained that the inspiration for this design comes from classic Scout vehicles, although he acknowledges that it may have an impact on the car’s aerodynamics and range.

According to him, “The car will remain in an upright position, it is definitely not a jelly bean.”

To provide further clarification, the protrusion at the front will be “extremely snug,” potentially leading to a longer truck bed. Additionally, the front grille will incorporate the recognizable feature of the brand’s fold-down windshield, similar to that of the original Scouts.

Scout is bridging the gap between the past and present by incorporating its iconic logo and a handful of vintage images. Furthermore, traditional door handles are said to be included instead of the typical flush design commonly seen in electric vehicles.

In spite of this particular design strategy, Scout is not inclined to fully embrace traditional aesthetics, as the electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer is striving to establish a fresh brand. As Keogh, a representative for Scout, stated, “We did not wish to convey to the American market that we are reverting back to the ’70s.” He emphasized, “We are in the 21st century and naturally, our car embodies a modern feel.”

The interior of the vehicle will follow a similar principle, as the center console is expected to be dominated by “chunky buttons.” This indicates that features such as capacitive touch will not be included in the design of Scout. It appears that the electric vehicle manufacturer has taken a lesson from its parent company, Volkswagen, who made the decision to eliminate flashy touch controls after receiving negative feedback from customers.

The leader of Scout Motors has expressed a desire to shift towards a more traditional approach in their electric vehicles, relying less on touchscreens and semiconductors. The aim is to mitigate potential software problems that have plagued other brands within the VW Group, such as those faced with the Cariad software.

According to the latest reports, the upcoming EV brand will continue to make use of over-the-air (OTA) updates in order to incorporate more advanced features at a later time. However, the main objective is to introduce “fairly straightforward” EVs right from the start. As stated by Keogh, the focus is on utilizing software where it can truly make an impact and keeping it behind the scenes as much as possible.

Scout Motors plans to unveil a couple of electric vehicle models later in 2021 with an attractive price range of approximately $50,000. The brand, supported by VW, will directly compete with Rivian – whose base model is priced at around $70,000 – as well as Jeep, which is set to release their own EV model, the Recon, later this year.
