Despite its promising start, the Lincoln Mark X never lived up to its full capabilities as it never made it into production. The short-lived Thunderbird, which was brought back to compete with the uniquely retro Chrysler PT Cruiser in the early 2000s, saw a sharp decline in sales after its first year on the market. Furthermore, the Lincoln LS, a luxurious sedan that shared the same platform as the Thunderbird, was also discontinued just one year after its counterpart.

However, the lack of widespread recognition is precisely what has elevated this idea to a scarce phenomenon that demands discussion.

The 2004 North American Automobile Show in Detroit featured the debut of a unique concept car, which was put up for sale. This car, inspired by the classic Ford Thunderbird Convertible, was a modern interpretation of its retro design. Both cars boasted distinct and recognizable features, with the Lincoln model showcasing a square-shaped design influenced by their cars from the 1960s, while the Thunderbird had a more rounded appearance.

The Lincoln Mark X boasts side mirrors that come with built-in turn signals, as well as 18-inch alloys paired with disc brakes on all four wheels. Additionally, it is equipped with fog lights and dual exhaust tips. The interior features a luxurious cream leather design, complete with a two-tone multi-function steering wheel, navigation system, and power locks and windows.

According to the seller, some functionalities may not be fully operational due to the experimental nature of the car. As a result, the vehicle is not eligible for registration and cannot be used on public roads.

Shifting gears to the engine, the Lincoln Mark X is equipped with a 3.9-liter V8 borrowed from Jaguar’s AJ series, which is also utilized in vehicles such as the Land Rover Defender. Taking cues from the Thunderbird specifications, the prototype has the potential to generate an impressive 280 horsepower and channel it through a five-speed automatic transmission to the rear wheels.

The upcoming Glendale auction, taking place from March 5-9, will feature the highly anticipated 2004 prototype convertible version of the Lincoln Mark X.
