June Debut: Electric Hot Hatch Alpine A290 Unveils Key Details

EV boasts Alpine F1-inspired steering wheel capabilities.

After a string of leaked images that surfaced a few days ago, Alpine has now released an official teaser for their upcoming A290 model, which was spotted being tested on snowy roads. Derived from the upcoming Renault 5 EV, the A290 is a fully electric hot hatch that will not be available in our market. However, it still provides a peek into the French manufacturer’s new electric vehicle strategy, as they plan to expand their presence to North America.

In its maiden voyage, the A290 – donning Alpine’s signature camouflage pattern – traversed through Sweden near the Arctic Circle, where temperatures can plummet to -22°F. It is common knowledge that electric cars are greatly affected by frigid climates, hence why Alpine aims to gather ample information in order to guarantee optimal performance even in the most severe weather situations.

Assessment covers various elements such as warming, clearing fog, and melting ice, and particularly crucial for a performance-focused brand like Alpine, the configuration of the electronic stability control system.

According to Alpine, the A290 has a length of 157.1 inches, a width of 71.7 inches, and a height of 59.8 inches. This makes it about six inches shorter in length than the previous Chevrolet Bolt EV. The wheelbase of the sporty hatchback is 99.6 inches.

Within, Alpine demonstrates that the interior of the cabin boasts an exceptional flat-bottomed sports steering wheel made of high-quality Nappa leather and features a distinctive white noon marker. Moreover, the vehicle is outfitted with various functions taken from the Alpine F1’s steering wheel, such as OV (overtake), RCH (recharge), and Drive modes.

Alpine, in collaboration with Michelin, has created a trio of tires specifically designed for its line of electric vehicles. The initial addition to this range is the A290. The selection features the Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 for winter weather, the Michelin Pilot Sport EV for summer driving, and the Michelin Pilot Sport S5 for all-around performance. These options will be made available to consumers to guarantee that they receive consistent and optimal performance in any type of weather.

“Our A290, the future compact B-segment electric sports car, is currently undergoing testing in the challenging and harsh environment of Sweden’s Lapland. The main objective of this crucial phase is to validate the direction we have chosen for handling and agility, which are integral elements of our DNA when it comes to low grip conditions,” stated Philippe Krief, CEO of Alpine.

As previously stated, it is unlikely that the Alpine A290 will be available in the US market due to Americans’ overall disinterest in small vehicles. However, Alpine plans to make a comeback in the US with their electric crossover models, which will directly compete with popular options such as the Porsche Macan and Cayenne. It is projected that the French company will enter the American market by 2027.

Currently, Alpine is preparing for the debut of the A290 in June.
