M3 Touring: BMW’s Unreleased E36 3 Series Wagon

The E36-era BMW 3 Series Touring is certainly one of the hottest station wagons that exists, but unfortunately it was never bestowed with an official M variant. Thanks to aftermarket components that reflect the specs of the iconic M3, a resourceful owner managed to assemble his own M3 estate – a car that BMW sadly never created.

Finished in a deep burgundy hue, lowered, and boosted by an S50 turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six motor, this M3 wagon build is the realization of YouTuber Jimmy Oakes’ vision. Aspiring to create a mean sleeper car, they have outdone themselves with the choice of an M3 engine and a complete body kit.

It should be observed that the front and back bumpers, alongside the side skirts of the E30, were hand-made by the Garagistic tuners renowned for their work with this model. As genuine M components are hard to come across in the present age, these weren’t standard parts, which is understandable. This is even truer for E36 M items since the version was last available in America in 1995.

Jimmy and his group of friends had fitted the outside M aerodynamic components throughout the video. They similarly compared the stock bumper with the M bumper, displaying how bigger and more intimidating the latter was. Nevertheless, they did not go to the extremes akin to the current M3 Touring, which is decorated with a prominent black diffuser.

Ultimately, the E36’s modifications sufficiently resemble what an E36 M3 wagon might look like. Jimmy states that the original car is still in its factory configuration and the paint on cloned components matches perfectly. Consequently, it won’t accurately be called a “sleeper” anymore; although, this vehicle still appears rather more restrained than the new-generation M3 Touring and future M5 Touring wagons developed by BMW.

The inclusion of the stylish M3 body kit has now finished Jimmy’s BMW E36 Wagon dream build. Sadly, it hasn’t been taken to the test track yet, however, judging from the video, its cortex-shattering sound surely makes it one extraordinary BMW.
