New Stellantis Patent Unveils Innovative Electric Off-Roader Gearbox Design

Discover How It Operates in Just a Few Steps

Stellantis is currently developing a cutting-edge transmission system in order to equip future electric off-road vehicles with the same level of performance as their internal-combustion engine counterparts. This patent has been officially submitted to the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Originally discovered by Mopar Insiders, this transmission has the potential to greatly enhance the driving experience of electric SUVs and trucks, such as the Jeep Recon and Ram 1500 REV, in tough terrain. While most electric cars typically have a one-speed transmission, Stellantis is developing a two-speed design. This could prove beneficial in off-road vehicles, as it allows for better control at low speeds. A low gear would be ideal for navigating rough terrain, where precise maneuvers and high amounts of torque are often necessary.

A secondary gear designed for smoother road use would enable the car to function like a typical electric vehicle. This setup mirrors the transfer case frequently found in robust off-road cars, SUVs, and trucks. With two gears available, Stellantis would not have to make sacrifices with a one-speed transmission that could impact fuel efficiency, distance traveled, and day-to-day driving capabilities.

Stellantis’ dual-speed electric vehicle transmission includes two individual sets of planetary gears. Each set is equipped with its own clutch, giving it the ability to engage or disengage as needed for various types of terrain. This allows for precise and efficient turning, making it perfect for navigating tight spaces. Similar to the Ford Bronco’s Trail Turn Assist and the G-turn on the upcoming Mercedes G-Class EV, this technology enables the vehicle to rotate within its own footprint. While some may view it as a mere gimmick, those who have experienced being stuck off-road would appreciate having such a feature at their disposal.

Stellantis may employ a dual-speed transmission in multiple future models, such as the Recon, as well as in Ram’s upcoming line of electric vehicles and off-roaders from other Stellantis labels. This technology could also be utilized in an all-electric version of the Durango, taking over as its successor.

In its off-roading “crawl” mode, the gearbox boasts a 3:1 reduction ratio, providing ample power for an electric off-roader to navigate steep inclines and maneuver over sizable boulders with ease. However, when it’s time to leave the rugged terrain behind and return to the pavement, the on-road second gear can be engaged, featuring a 1:1 ratio for smooth driving on regular roads.

It will be intriguing to observe if this functionality is integrated into future Jeep and Ram electric cars or if Stellantis decides to save it for upcoming models. There is even the potential for it to be included as an optional add-on at an additional cost, or exclusively bundled with Rubicon X and Mojave X trims for Jeep vehicles. However, as with any innovative technology, there is a chance that it may not even make it to the market as other concepts could surpass it.

It remains to be seen.
