Powerful Yet Unconventional: The Cybertruck’s Aerodynamic Design
Most of us have viewed the release video of the Cybertruck in production, where it competes with a Porsche 911 and tows another one. The outcome was a win for the truck, but there has been much discussion about the validity of this victory. Luckily, we now have a comparison between the Cybertruck and a new 911, thanks to the team at Throttle House, without any editing tricks.
In a thrilling head-to-head competition, we witness the ultimate showdown between two icons of the automotive world: the Cybertruck and the unrivaled champion of YouTube drag racing, the Porsche 911 Turbo S. The 911 boasts a commanding 640 horsepower generated by its lively 3.7-liter twin-turbo flat-six engine, capable of powering all four wheels. According to Porsche, this beast can rocket from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.6 seconds and reach an impressive top speed of 205 mph. On the other hand, Tesla’s Cybertruck boasts equally impressive numbers, listed as having the same 60-mph acceleration time in its beefed-up 845-hp Cyberbeast version. However, the truck’s top speed is significantly lower at 130 mph. But when it comes to a quarter-mile drag race, top speed is irrelevant.
Do you know what is truly important? Aerodynamics. This fact becomes evident in the following competition. The initial of two rounds starts with the hefty pickup truck launching off the starting line with a surprising burst of speed. It swiftly gains a car’s length lead over the 911, an impressive accomplishment for the Turbo S which currently stands as one of the fastest accelerating cars available for purchase. And for a brief moment, the Cybertruck maintains its lead.
If this were a drag race covering an eighth of a mile (similar to Tesla’s infamous video of towing a Porsche), the outcome would likely be a tie. However, as the speeds increase, the sleek design of the 911 allows it to gain the upper hand. Despite having over 200 horsepower less than the Cybertruck, it effortlessly secures a victory. A second race from a rolling start yields a similar result – the Cybertruck takes an initial lead, but the Turbo S ultimately triumphs.
Porsche may have claimed victory, but there’s no denying that the powerful Tesla also has impressive performance capabilities at lower speeds. When pitted against other pickups, it would easily come out on top. However, the Cybertruck is no match for the reigning champion of acceleration.
