Rivian Unveils Budget-Friendly SUV: A First Look at the New Model

New Release: March 7 Launch Date

On March 7, Rivian is set to debut their first “affordable” SUV, the R2. In anticipation, the company has shared a video showcasing a sneak peek of the new model. The video offers a glimpse at the front of the vehicle, revealing its signature lighting that bears resemblance to other models in their lineup.

Rivian has been relatively tight-lipped when it comes to sharing information about their upcoming electric vehicle. However, what we do know is that it will be smaller in size compared to the R1S and will also have a more reasonable price point. In fact, CEO RJ Scaringe has hinted that it could potentially cost anywhere between $45,000 and $50,000. This puts it in a higher price range than some of its competitors such as the Tesla Model Y, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Kia EV6, and Hyundai Ioniq 5. Of course, until we officially discover the starting price, only then can we compare it to others.

The R2 stays true to Rivian’s iconic lighting design. It showcases the brand’s signature light bar spanning the entire front, along with the recognizable Stadium-shaped headlights that make it instantly recognizable on the streets. While the teaser only reveals the R2’s front end, it leaves us to speculate about the potential design of the taillights, but based on the R1S and R1T models, the rear will most likely feature a clean and sleek full-width lighting element.

Scaringe stated that the upcoming R2 will serve as Rivian’s “Model 3 moment,” with potential obstacles in scaling up production to keep up with the high demand for their budget-friendly option. In anticipation, the company has allocated a substantial $5 billion towards constructing a new factory in Georgia.

Information regarding the powertrain, performance, and mileage is still undisclosed. It is likely that we will receive further glimpses of the SUV in the anticipation leading up to its official release at the beginning of next month, so keep an eye out.
