As the launch of the updated Volkswagen Golf approaches, VW’s chief designer Andreas Mindt has released the initial official sketches on Instagram. The latest sketch of the headlight design is replacing the dual lighting cluster of the previous model with a more streamlined single finish, in line with what the German automaker had previously teased. The taillights have also been given a refresh with a pixelated pattern, similar to what was showcased at the 2024 CES event.

The sketch reveals a fresh take on the grille design, reminiscent of the European Golf Move. The version seen at CES featured a honeycomb pattern, which is likely the standard for the US GTI model. Although the sketch depicts square exhausts, it is anticipated that the American Golf GTI and R versions will maintain their sleek circular tips.
The upcoming Golf update will serve as a mid-cycle revamp for the eighth generation model, which was originally launched five decades ago. The distinguished Italian car designer Giorgetto Giugiaro was responsible for creating the hatchback in 1974, also recognized for his work on the BMW M1 and VW Scirocco.
Besides the updates to its appearance, the upcoming model will also see a redesign of its physical buttons in response to criticisms about its haptic controls. Additionally, the interior will feature the new ChatGPT AI technology developed by Cerence Chat Pro, although its availability in the US is still being evaluated. As for performance, Volkswagen of America has stated to CarBuzz that the manual transmission will be replaced with a dual-clutch transmission (DCT).
The upcoming release of the revamped VW Golf this month will align perfectly with the model’s 50-year anniversary, during which it has sold an impressive total of more than 37 million units. The car company plans to feature the updated hatchback in various car exhibitions, including the Salon Retromobile event in Paris.
It is anticipated that VW will begin the pre-sales phase for the updated Golf in the spring of 2024.
