Stellantis Issues Recall for 284k Dodge Chargers and Chrysler 300s Due to Side Airbag Issues

New Inflator Problem Unrelated to Takata: Ruptures and Cracks Reported

Stellantis has announced a voluntary recall for select 2018-2021 models of Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 sedans due to potential malfunctions in their side curtain airbag inflators. After a thorough investigation, the company found that these modules may have the tendency to rupture, potentially causing fragments to be expelled into the interior of the vehicle and potentially harming its occupants.

The recall encompasses 284,982 sedans, however Stellantis is confident that only a small percentage of the vehicles are affected. Regardless, they urge owners to promptly address the issue.

This recent product recall is not connected to the previous call-back of Takata airbags. The newly affected inflators employ a distinct layout and substance.

The car manufacturer has a solution in place and is currently storing replacement parts to ensure efficient servicing of the affected cars by dealers. Skilled workers will swap out the damaged module with one manufactured outside of the possible defective time frame, which spans from July 5th, 2018 to May 19th, 2021.

Stellantis commenced an inquiry into the matter on February 17, 2023. As of February 2024, it had discovered a total of five customer support reports associated with the inflators and, on March 7, took the step of initiating a voluntary recall for safety purposes. The corporation has confirmed that there have been no incidents or injuries linked to this issue.

During the production process, the intrusion of moisture can result in corrosion within the inflators. This can lead to the development of stress cracks which have the potential to burst during inflation. All five reported incidents occurred in automobiles where the interior climate reached temperatures higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
