Massive 2nd Recall Issued for Fire Hazard on Over 250,000 VW and Audi Vehicles

Volkswagen has announced a recall of 261,257 VW and Audi vehicles due to a malfunction in the suction jet pump. Failure to address this issue could result in a fire hazard.The decision for this recall comes after Volkswagen identified an issue with the suction jet pump in these models. Failure of the pump could cause a fuel leak, leading to potential ignition of flames.To ensure the safety of their customers, Volkswagen is urging owners of affected vehicles to bring them in for inspection and any necessary repairs. The company will cover all costs associated with addressing the defective suction jet pump.The recalled vehicles include certain model years of VW Golf, Passat, and Tiguan, as well as Audi A3, A4, and Q5. The specific model years vary between each make and model.According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, this recall affects cars with 1.8-liter and 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engines from 2016 to 2019. A full list of affected vehicles can be found on the Volkswagen website.Volkswagen has assured its customers that no accidents or injuries have been reported in connection with the faulty suction jet pump. As per the safety recall issued by the NHTSA, it was found that the seal rings in the suction jet pump were installed with excessive tension. This could potentially lead to fuel leakage into the evaporative emissions (EVAP) system if the seals become compromised. Consequently, in a worst-case scenario, fuel may seep through the charcoal canister filter element when the system becomes flooded.

The list of vehicles being recalled consists of front-wheel drive models of the Audi A3 sedan, ranging from 2015 to 2020 (totaling 47,391 units), as well as the Audi A3 Cabriolet from 2015 to 2019 (totaling 3,875 units).

In the midst of this, there have been detected issues with certain Volkswagen models such as the 2019-2020 iteration of the Volkswagen Jetta GLI, which accounts for roughly 10,925 units. Additionally, the 2018 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen GP has been affected as well, with 606 units experiencing complications. Alongside these, the 2015-2017 versions of the Volkswagen Golf SportWagen, consisting of 19,673 units, have also been identified with problems. Similarly, a significant number of 58,544 2015-2022 Volkswagen Golf A7s and 114,485 2015-2020 Volkswagen Golf GTIs have been found to be affected.

In August of 2016, Volkswagen issued a recall for certain vehicles in order to upgrade a particular suction jet pump to the current version, Version 1.1. Fast forward two years and initial instances of the pump failing began to surface, sparking investigations to resolve the problem. Recently, the company officially announced a recall to replace the pump with an even further enhanced model, Version 2.0, at absolutely no expense to consumers. In response to this matter, both Volkswagen and Audi will implement a reimbursement initiative to cover any costs associated with repairing the issue.

The latest pump is built upon research of 1,410 warranty complaints filed for FWD vehicles that underwent repairs from March 2016 to December 2023. No instances of fires in connection to this issue have been recorded.

Volkswagen has once again issued a recall due to concerns about potential fire hazards, following similar recalls last year, including one for a defective 12-volt battery charging cable in the ID.4 model. This recent recall is not the first time that Volkswagen and its subsidiary Audi have taken action together to address the same issue, as seen in 2022 when 232,000 vehicles from both brands were recalled due to faulty infotainment systems.

Volkswagen will be issuing recall notices on April 12 to notify owners of a new problem with the defective suction jet pump.
