For the uninitiated, ‘Initial D’ was a well-known Japanese manga series that focused on the world of street racing. Authored by Shuichi Shigeno, this comic put forth a plethora of vintage JDM vehicles ranging from the legendary Mazda RX-7 and Toyota Supra to the iconic Nissan Skyline GT-R. At center stage of the story was the Toyota AE86, popularly known as the Corolla Sport in America – an automobile whose legend continues to endure throughout decades.

Kang seems to be ideal for the position of director with regards to this particular project due to Initial D focusing primarily on the motorsport practice of drifting that we’ve fondly seen in Tokyo Drift. He’s certainly no stranger to the scene as you may recall his character skilfully manoeuvring the acclaimed VeilSide Mazda RX-7 in the 2006 edition of the franchise. Outside of acting, he’s also a fervent assertor of the gearhead lifestyle alongside having commissioned his own personal Nissan Z which was inspired by the already mentioned rotary car.

The lineup of vehicles for the upcoming movie has yet to be revealed, however, fresh iterations of the original individuals, such as the Toyota GR 86 and Nissan R35 GT-R, could bring a heightened level of enthusiasm. After all, the last time that “Initial D” had a live-action adaptation was back in 2005, so anticipate something new.

“It’s about cars and drifting and cool things like that,” Kang said to SCMP. “I’m envisioning something akin to Rocky or Karate Kid: a fun, big-budget movie that expresses my passion for cars.”

If the film is a success, it will certainly give rise to a new generation of wanderers influenced by the Fast and Furious franchise. This phenomenon has got to the stage where people living in Los Angeles are ascribing illicit road racing activities to the movie series in the Angelino Heights zone.

Kang’s third directing endeavor, the Initial D project, follows his debut on the 2022 Shaky Shivers film and a forthcoming documentary about being brought up in a biracial household in America.
