Testing Bugatti Bolide: Stunning at Airbase

Living Wild: The Untamed Chiron
BUGATTI BOLIDE: High-Intensity Airbase Testing

The extraordinary Chiron was pushed to the front in late 2020, as Bugatti revealed their most fierce implementation of the vehicle, termed the Bolide. Originally intended to be singular, it became clear soon afterward that the model would be accessible with more copies being created. Even so, you won’t see the initial 40 until 2024, when the excited owners receive delivery. In the interim, testing is taking place at an airbase for this wild W16 car.

Though inspired by the Chiron, one likely wouldn’t recognise it as such due to its extraordinary carbon fibre chassis unveiled without a trace of paint here. Despite housing an immense sixteen-cylinder engine, the Bolide weighs no more than 1,450 kilograms (3,196 pounds): fluids and driver not included. An enormous power of 1,577 hp ensures Bugatti has achieved a tremendous weight-to-power relation of 0.9 kg/hp.

“It’s an awe-inspiring experience,” said Bugatti, and they weren’t wrong. The W16 engine, freed from the restrictions imposed on production cars, produces a staggering 1,600 Newton-meters (1,180 pound-feet) of torque – enough to convince 40 lucky people to pay €4 million (before taxes) for one! But that’s not all; each car will come with a fire extinguisher and a HANS (head and neck support) device, as well as free access to track days. All in all, it’s an experience you won’t soon forget!

As a refresher, the W16 engine is set to retire with the Bolide and Mistral roadster being the last vehicles to feature it. This engine has been around for two decades now, with the EB 16/4 Veyron concept being unveiled in 2003. The next model from Bugatti will still feature a combustion engine, but it will be smaller and likely have some form of electrification as well. Mate Rimac, CEO of Bugatti Rimac, has described the new ICE as being “totally bonkers”, and promised that everyone will be “blown away”.
