Toyota Hilux Electric Pickup Under Scrutiny

Truck Goes Electric?

In spite of the absence of Toyota Hilux from American roads, this compact pickup has a huge fan base internationally. With an enhanced hybrid diesel engine coming in 2024, the Hilux will have increased power and efficiency. Apparently, there is now a likelihood that the Hilux could go electric.

In an interview with Top Gear, Emmanuel Beaune, the head of Toyota Europe’s light commercial vehicles division, revealed that the company is still exploring the possibility of a Hilux EV. “It’s part of our multi-pathway approach to have different powertrains and solutions,” he said. “At this stage, I can’t say more than that we are looking into it. There are some investigations taking place, but I can’t comment further.”

Toyota has unveiled an EXCLUSIVE all-electric Hilux concept for 2022, depicted above. Named the ‘Hilux Revo BEV’, it flaunts a range of approximately 143 miles, yet there remain no specifics about battery capacity or electric motors. Toyota has declared, however, its intention to shortly launch electric pick-ups as taxis in regions such as Thailand.

Currently, no mini electric pickup trucks are accessible in the same market as the Hilux. We do have knowledge that Isuzu is implementing a battery-fueled version of the D-Max and Volkswagen is constructing an eco-friendly SUV which is modeled off their Amarok truck. Until then, it is uncertain as to who will consequently make it onto the market first.
