The upcoming replacement for the 2025 Toyota 4Runner has been observed while undergoing testing in Arizona, close to Toyota’s testing facilities located in Wittman.
A new 4Runner model, cloaked in thick camouflage, was finally caught on camera by a member of the 4runner6g forum. Despite the challenging nature of deciphering the design elements under the cover, the latest version seems to boast a larger size, with an extended wheelbase and a wider body. An interesting observation is the white portion of the camouflage, which serves to make the rear lights visible to those behind. This suggests that the upcoming 4Runner may feature a lightbar, similar to what can be seen on several recent Toyota and Lexus SUVs.
It is not unexpected for the 2025 version of the 4Runner to adopt design elements from the newly revamped Sequoia and Tacoma pickup truck, which received updates in MY2024. The areas surrounding the back doors, C- and D-pillars, and rear fenders also suggest inspiration from Lexus designs, although we cannot confirm without first removing the camouflage.
As the 4Runner undergoes a style evolution, it is anticipated to utilize the versatile TNGA-F platform, already utilized by the Land Cruiser and Sequoia. This upgrade promises a greater level of refinement and sophistication while preserving the rugged and capable nature that defines the 4Runner.
It is logical for Toyota to utilize the turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder motors found in the Tacoma model. This particular engine comes in various levels of performance for the pickup truck. The initial offering, being the SR5, is anticipated to deliver 228 horsepower and 243 lb-ft of torque. The higher trims are expected to feature upgraded versions of the same engine for enhanced power.
As the highest tier versions, we anticipate that the TRD Pro and Limited editions will employ the i-FORCE MAX hybrid motor, boasting 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. Devoted 4Runner patrons may bemoan the departure of the 4.0-liter V6 engine.
Although it’s regrettable to bid farewell to the V6, there is a possibility that the upcoming 4Runner may come equipped with the six-speed manual transmission from the latest Tacoma model. Naturally, Toyota will also make an automatic option available in order to cater to a wider range of buyers.
