2026 Rivian R2 Priced at $45,000 and Expected to Launch Soon

Affordable Model Y alternative from Rivian, on par with prices, expanding options for US brand.

After much anticipation, Rivian has released their highly awaited budget-friendly vehicle, the R2. Unveiled just today, this compact SUV carries a price tag of $45,000, putting it in real competition with the Tesla Model Y, which starts at $44,360.

The R2 is the latest addition to Rivian’s lineup, serving as their fourth vehicle and second SUV. Designed to fit comfortably under the larger R1S, the R2 features innovative battery cells placed in the floor and a rear-mounted electric motor. Higher trim levels will offer all-wheel drive options with the choice of dual or tri-motor configurations.

According to Rivian, regardless of the variant, the R2 boasts a range of more than 300 miles before needing to be recharged. Opt for the tri-motor model and you’ll be able to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than three seconds.

The R2 from the Illinois-based company maintains its distinct appearance, featuring a solid front end and a high, square-shaped cabin. You might mistake it for a smaller version of the R1S and we wouldn’t blame you. Inside, you’ll find a similar layout with a large touchscreen at the center. Additionally, there are foldable front and back seats, flip-out rear windows, and two glove compartments (an increase from none in the R1S).

One of the key advantages of the R2 is its eligibility for the $7,500 EV tax credit from the federal government, making it a highly attractive option in the fiercely competitive affordable EV market. Additionally, charging should not be a major concern as the car is equipped with the North American Charging Standard port and has access to Tesla’s extensive network of Superchargers.

In the battle for dominance in the car market, one contender stands out as a formidable opponent to Tesla’s reign: the R2. This car poses a significant threat to Tesla’s market share.
