911’s Improved Power Without GT3 Label

GT4 RS Beats Big Bro in Drag Race

illustrates. The Porsche 911 GT3 and Cayman GT4 RS have the same motor under their respective hoods. The 4.0-litre, non-turbocharged flat-six pumps out greater outputs in the larger GT3 thanks to a more permissive exhaust set-up. However, as a recent video of a drag race between the two proves, “more” isn’t invariably “better”.

The Porsche motorsport lineup is highlighted by the 4.0-liter engine, turbocharged to generate a formidable 510 horses and dubbed good for 346 pound-feet (470 Newton-meters) of torque in the GT3 spec. It produces a slightly lesser 500 hp and 331 lb-ft (450 Newton-meters) of torque in the Cayman model. Both versions come coupled with the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission supplying power to the rear wheels. Comparing mass, the Cayman weighing in at a trimmer 3119 lbs (1,415 kilograms) compared to the 911’s heavier 3,218 pounds (1,435 kgs).

was an entirely different story, however. The Cayman managed to get ahead initially in the first two of three drag races, grabbing victories by narrow margins. It finished the quarter-mile sprint in 11.3 seconds, whereas the 911 needed 11.5. However, the 911 began slower on the start line in both races, likely preventing it from taking the win. Yet, this all changed for the third event as something entirely different occurred.

Even with the absence of a launch, the GT3 still did not measure up. The first event, where both vehicles were adjusted for optimum comfort, was essentially a draw; however, the Cayman had a clear advantage in the next bout. The 911 only emerged as the victor when it came to the brake test – being able to stop in shorter time than its competitor.

The narration markedly transforms when contrasting the two vehicles on a legitimate racetrack. At the Nurburgring, the Cayman was only 4.6 seconds slower than the 911. Porsche trumpeted with the GT4’s introduction that it required 7 minutes and 4.5 seconds to circuit the 12.944-mile course. The GT3 managed it in 6 minutes and 59.9 seconds. Therefore, even though the GT4 RS may be faster in a straight line, when rounding curves, the GT3 is still supreme.
