Affordable Rimac Rival: BYD Yangwang U9 with Supercar Specs, No Ferrari Price Tag

Chinese automaker’s electric supercar priced to match ambitious goals

Chinese car manufacturer BYD has recently introduced its debut electric supercar, the Yangwang U9. With its competitive price and impressive performance, it is poised to pose a threat to established automakers. The U9 was first teased last year during the unveiling of the floating U8 SUV, and it comes with a hefty price tag of 1.68 million RMB (approximately $233,000 in current conversion rates). This is a significant increase from the initial estimated price of $145,000 that was announced.

The Yangwang U9 is built on the automaker’s e4 platform and is equipped with four electric motors, each situated on its own wheel, resulting in the ability for independent control of torque output. This advanced powertrain generates an impressive maximum of 1,300 horsepower and 1,239 lb-ft of torque, surpassing the initially predicted 1,100-hp output from the previous year. While its capabilities are commendable, it falls short compared to the pricier Rimac Nevera hypercar.

According to BYD, the Yangwang U9 has the capability to reach a top speed of 192 mph and can accelerate from 0-62 mph in an impressive 2.3 seconds. Based on track tests, the supercar can also complete a quarter-mile run in under 10 seconds. Additionally, it boasts a collection of 12 dynamic and non-dynamic aero components designed for enhanced efficiency and improved heat dissipation. According to official reports from China, the car weighs in at 5,456 pounds.

The thermal management system of the U9 has been carefully adjusted to withstand extreme temperatures, resulting in a 100% increase in its top cooling capability. Additionally, it can handle a maximum charging power of 500 kW.

One of the major strengths of the Yangwang U9 is its DiSus-X Intelligent Body Control System, which can electronically modify suspension movement by up to 2.95 inches. While this feature may impress as a unique party trick, the true purpose behind it is to provide exceptional handling capabilities that are out of this world.

The Yangwang U9 prides itself on its impressive Super Carbon-Fiber Cabin, boasting a reported torsional stiffness of 40,142 lbs per degree. Additionally, the cabin’s roof has been designed to withstand over 24,640 lbs of compression, ensuring safety in case of a rollover.

As soon as you enter, the electric sports car boasts a pair of 14-way configurable seats. To top off the in-car entertainment experience, a top-of-the-line Dynaudio Evidence Series sound system is also included. Additionally, the vehicle features a DiLink150 advanced platform with specialized 4nm 5G processors, perfect for utilizing during race days as an intelligent racing companion (currently only available for track data in China).

Could the Yangwang U9 be making its way to the United States as BYD makes efforts to expand globally? Only time will tell, but BYD has confirmed that it plans to start delivering the vehicle in China by the summer of 2024.
