Cybertruck Introduces Off-Road Capability with Locking Differentials

Avoid these nonessential purchases.

The debut of the Tesla Cybertruck occurred approximately five months ago with notable omissions of essential features typically found in contemporary pickup trucks. However, this will soon be rectified through a forthcoming software update that will activate the electric pickup’s locking differentials and other off-road capabilities. These enhancements aim to assist owners in navigating trails without facing any potential embarrassment.

The latest functionalities can be accessed via the new Off-Road Mode, enhancing performance over rocks, gravel, deep snow, and sand. The locking differentials are offered on the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive version. In the triple-motor truck, a front-locking differential is included, while a virtual rear-locked differential remains engaged in Overland mode.

Trail Assist simplifies the control of slow-speed driving on rough terrain, allowing the driver to concentrate on steering and keeping the vehicle upright. The introduction of a Baja Mode enhances the car’s stability and performance when the Stability Assist is adjusted to Minimal.

It features hill ascent and descent control capabilities, but not all the enhancements contribute to improving its off-roading performance. Tesla has also enhanced the truck’s capacity to calculate payload estimates and automatically adjust the adaptive suspension accordingly.

The Cybertruck excels on slick surfaces, and a fresh CyberTent Mode adjusts the suspension for a smooth sleeping area. It also ensures that the lights stay illuminated and the outlets remain energized.

Tesla announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the over-the-air updates will be “coming out shortly.”
