Four Fresh EVs and Hybrids: Volvo XC90 Leads Name Change Charge

Streamlined SUV Naming: 4 Models with Unique Names and No Overlap

The Swedish automaker Volvo has recently announced a name change for two of its fully electric models, the C40 and XC40 Recharge. These vehicles will now be known as the EC40 and EX40, respectively, in line with the brand’s newest additions to their electric lineup, the EX30 and EX90 SUVs. Additionally, plug-in hybrid models will no longer bear the Recharge badge and will instead be distinguished by the ‘T6’ or ‘T8’ suffix, indicating their power output and position within the vehicle range.

The EC40 and EX40 no longer bear the Recharge designation, as the letter ‘E’ now signifies their classification as battery-powered cars. Volvo has announced that this move reflects its goal of becoming a full-fledged electric vehicle manufacturer by 2030. However, there are other modifications that have been implemented on these vehicles.

Volvo announces the availability of a Performance software package for Twin Motor models. This upgrade boasts enhanced acceleration with an additional 33 horsepower, optimized accelerator mapping for improved throttle response, and a ‘Performance’ drive mode that unleashes the full 436 horses.

Volvo Cars is pleased to announce that an exciting new upgrade will soon be available for customers purchasing an electric vehicle through our convenient mobile app. The optional package will provide a range of added features and enhancements. Additionally, owners of the 2024 C40 and XC40 Recharge Twin Motor models will have the option to download our Performance software for their vehicles. This allows drivers to experience even more power and performance from their EVs.

Apart from the alteration in nomenclature and possible increase in performance, Volvo will also unveil a Black Edition for the EX40 and EC40. These particular models will be treated to a coat of sleek Onyx Black paint, black 20-inch alloy wheels, and dark exterior badges. Customers will have the option to pick between either textile or microtech charcoal upholstery for the interior. The Black Edition bundle was initially introduced for the S60 sedan and subsequently became available for the XC60 compact SUV.

Several Volvo hybrid models are set to receive minor improvements. Updates to the XC60 and XC90 B5 mild-hybrid versions have led to a more efficient engine combustion process, resulting in lower CO2 emissions and increased fuel efficiency of 4% and 2%, respectively (based on WLTP standards).

Volvo has announced a modification to its model naming system aimed at making it easier for customers to distinguish between hybrid and fully electric vehicles when making a purchase. Despite this alteration, the gas-powered XC40 will continue to use its existing model name.

“By aligning our trailblazing first electric models with the rest of our electric car portfolio, we simplify choice for consumers as we continue to electrify our line-up and refresh our hybrids,” stated Bjorn Annwall, Volvo’s chief commercial officer and deputy CEO.

If you’re a devoted Volvo patron who is not yet willing to adopt the electric way of life, there’s no need to worry. The company has assured customers that its selection of hybrid and low-emission vehicles will continue to be available for many years to come.
