GM Releases: No More CarPlay or Auto Android

New EV: Compatible with Screen-Mirroring Apps?

“We wanted to reach out to clear up any confusion that may have been caused by earlier articles and to emphasize our strong relationships with Apple and Google, both of which are deeply committed to driver safety. GM’s embedded infotainment strategy is all about taking advantage of the enhanced integration it provides with the larger GM ecosystem and its vehicles.” UPDATE 12/14: A GM representative has shared the following statement with CarBuzz.

General Motors has experienced a great deal of contention due to their choice of relinquishing Apple CarPlay and Android Auto services from upcoming ecologic vehicles. Even though GM gave out a few rationales, this was not acknowledged or welcomed warmly. However, it looks as though safety is the main culprit behind this contentious move.

Tim Babbitt, leader of the infotainment product at GM, mentioned to MotorTrend that the problem has to do with diverting the attention of the driver. Nevertheless, pause a second: aren’t applications like mirroring screens meant to minimize diversion and cell phone utility? Yes, but Babbitt stated that features such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not successful in doing this, particularly when using a wireless connection.

He attests that these apps usually have stability concerns, which can be irksome for the chauffeur. Delayed reactions and frail connections may prompt some drivers to pick up their phones and try to address this difficulty. As per Babbitt, this can draw away their attention from the road, creating a potential danger.

Whilst it is anticipated that the motor manufacturer should tackle the issue, the fault may not be their responsibility. The difficulty could be associated with either the coding or the device itself. GM’s plan is to implement an integrated mechanism that would minimise distractions compared to a mobile app, thus promoting safer motoring. Babbitt stated to MT that this has yet to be analysed, though the firm understands customers would find this preferable. Substantially, his peers have reciprocated these thoughts.

“We are certain that as customers become more acquainted with the integrated system, they will recognize its features, ease of use, and advantages,” said GM representative Kelly Cusinato earlier this year.

Developed in collaboration with Google, the newly created system is intended to bring together the advantages of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in GM electric vehicles like the Chevrolet Blazer EV. This Ultifi infotainment program furnishes users with integrated applications like Google Maps and Google Assistant, in addition to other perennial favorites such as Spotify.

Customers can now take advantage of a reliable and dependable navigation system and no longer have to use the applications installed on their phones. Another great attribute is Google Assistant. Voice assistants are not new, however they usually come across as difficult and annoying. Due to its user-friendliness, Google Assistant is often well thought of; especially in the car, since it gives drivers the ability to manipulate several functions without ever having to remove their hands from the wheel.

Whilst security is an impetus behind this call, let us not overlook that General Motors aims to be profitable. Crucial elements of the new system are unencumbered for drivers for a period of 8 years at no cost. After that duration, users will have to pay for further use. This infotainment platform additionally offers the possibility to subscribe to various services, should customers decide to pay for them.

As the study has presented, General Motors is undertaking an ambitious goal of gaining financial returns in the ballpark of $25 billion every year from subscriptions by the year 2030. Notably, it is not only GM which is devoting significant resources to use subscription services as a source of income; several car manufacturers have shown their faith in this strategy.

Concerning various other companies, General Motors isn’t the exclusive maker to not include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Tesla has evaded them for an extended period of time, and their cars are still widely admired by their clients.

Despite the potential for a shift in loyalty from GM’s faithful following, there is however, still a remote possibility that they might migrate to another brand because of this seemingly small alteration. Is the auto conglomerate making an error? Only time will tell. The Prologue and Acura ZDX, two automobiles with Ultimum framework, will even so, remain compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

In a statement to MT, GM said it wanted to “clarify that comments about GM’s position on phone projection were misrepresented in previous articles,” adding that it wanted to “reinforce its partnerships with Google and Apple.” The automaker went on to explain that its embedded infotainment strategy is “driven by the benefits of having a system that allows for greater integration with the larger GM ecosystem and vehicles.”
