No Hurry for Volvo to Discontinue XC90, XC60, and S90 Models

Auto Company Plans to Maintain Mild and Plug-In Hybrid Models for Several More Years.

Volvo is at the forefront of embracing an all-electric future for its brand, but it remains committed to investing in cars powered by traditional gasoline engines. According to a recent article from Auto Express, Volvo has revealed plans to revamp its mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid models within the latter half of the decade.

It has been reported that the XC90, S90, and V60 models have the potential to continue for up to six more years. Despite this, Volvo’s goal of becoming an all-electric brand by 2030 will remain unchanged. The upcoming release of the Volvo EX90 will serve as a leading force in the company’s electrification efforts and is set to be manufactured at their South Carolina facility later this year.

In the United States, Bjorn Annwall, the chief operating officer of Volvo, announced that the company is aiming to boost sales of XC90 models in the central region while also increasing sales of EX90 models on the West Coast. This decision is not unexpected, given that California is widely recognized as a pioneer in adopting electric vehicles and has set a goal to end the sale of gasoline-powered cars by 2035.

Volvo’s latest strategy is to tailor their marketing efforts towards catering to specific market preferences, rather than solely focusing on electric vehicles. Similarly, GM also attempted this tactic, but soon came to acknowledge the difficulty of selling EVs. As a result, the company, headquartered in Michigan, has decided to scale back their EV program and redirect their attention towards plug-in hybrids.

“Undoubtedly, the shift to electrification occurs at varying rates across the globe,” stated Annwall. “This is a key advantage of Volvo, as we possess a well-rounded portfolio.”

In anticipation of the shift, Volvo has enlisted the help of Aurobay to assist with its traditional engines as the company shifts its focus towards creating electric powertrains. The diesel lineup, which was originally added to the brand’s offerings in 1979, was ultimately discontinued in the previous year.

Volvo has not yet released specific details about its new hybrid initiative. Nevertheless, the car manufacturer stated that enhancements to the exterior appearance, interior layout, and infotainment system are in the works for the upcoming hybrid models.

“Yes, we will definitely be investing in some of the key PHEV/MHEV cars,” stated the spokesperson. “We will update you on which cars and when, but it is evident that they will remain a crucial and complementary part of our portfolio.”
