Racing Icon Andy Wallace Pushes Bugatti Bolide to Limits in Ultimate Trial

Billionaire breaks record with $4.7 million Bugatti Bolide in pre-production test drive.

Prior to the commencement of producing the Bolide, Bugatti – known for its exceptional hypercars – sought assistance from acclaimed British race car driver Andy Wallace for a final evaluation. This shakedown serves as a stark reminder that state-of-the-art technology and sheer force demand precise driving skills.

Bugatti is remaining quiet regarding Wallace’s recent public appearance and the performance of their track-only Bolide model. Nevertheless, a recent comment from the company sheds light on their long-standing collaboration with the renowned driver as well as the staggering $5 million price tag for the Bolide. Wallace himself declares, “The Bolide holds a special place in my heart; it is truly unmatched – a true gem from Bugatti that has reignited the exhilarating emotions and sensations I once felt during my racing career.”

Wallace has been serving as a Bugatti Pilote Officiel, also known as a Bugatti test driver, since 2011. In addition to his responsibilities behind the wheel, Wallace utilizes his vast knowledge and experience to influence the design process of renowned vehicles such as the Bugatti Chiron. He has played a crucial role in guiding the production of the impressive 1,500-horsepower Divo and the incredibly high-powered Centodieci.

Bugatti acknowledges Wallace’s expertise in handling extreme velocities as a valuable asset to the Bolide development group. The challenges he has faced on the race track have greatly influenced Bugatti’s engineering process, taking into account both physical and psychological limitations of competitive driving.

The production process for the 40 Bolide units, a term derived from the French word for “racing car,” is set to commence later this year. The renowned 8.0-liter W16 engine will boast a quad-turbo mechanism, generating an exceptional output of 1,578 horsepower and 1,180 lb-ft of torque.

The Bolide’s stopping power is provided by a specially made Brembo carbon fiber brake system, the largest of its kind to be manufactured. The front brakes of this beastly car are equipped with two eight-piston monobloc calipers and four advanced pads for superior performance, partnered with remarkable 390×37.5 mm carbon discs. Meanwhile, the rear brakes are built to meet the rigorous standards of the elite LMDh racing category.

Wallace has been a successful racer for many years, spanning across several decades. He is most recognized for his outstanding accomplishments which include three triumphant victories at the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans and numerous wins at both the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring. In addition to these impressive feats on the track, he has also left his mark in the record books. One notable achievement was in 1998 when he took control of a McLaren F1, reaching an astonishing top speed of 240.1 mph, setting the record for the fastest production car at the time. However, this record was soon surpassed by Wallace’s remarkable performance behind the wheel of a Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ in 2019. With unparalleled skill and determination, he became the first person to break the 300 mph barrier in a series production car.
