America’s Fate: Unfortunate
Volkswagen has recently unveiled its latest addition to the electric car lineup, the ID.3 GTX. This model is a compact hatchback, which has been given the GTX treatment, resulting in an all-electric powerhouse with 322 horsepower and rear-wheel drive capability. This release comes on the heels of another GTX variant, the ID.7 GTX Tourer, which was also announced this week.
There will be two options available – a standard version and a Performance model – in order to cater to varying power needs. Both have been equipped with athletic add-ons and ensure excellent levels of performance and a remarkable (according to WLTP standards) distance coverage. As a high-performance hatchback, it is expected to excel in terms of handling, and Volkswagen guarantees this along with a well-equipped cabin boasting cutting-edge features and safety mechanisms.
Volkswagen’s ID.3 GTX model now boasts a rear-mounted electric motor capable of producing 282 horsepower and 402 pound-feet of torque. For those seeking even more power, the Performance version offers an increase to 322 horsepower, surpassing not only the Golf R but also many of VW’s turbocharged V6 engines in terms of performance.
Even though the ID.3 GTX boasts impressive power statistics, it is not as speedy as anticipated. The standard model accelerates to 62 mph in a solid six seconds, while the Performance edition achieves this feat 0.4 seconds faster. It should be noted that these are preliminary calculations, and we may witness even more impressive numbers in the future. For comparison, the Golf GTI and R achieve 60 mph in roughly 5.1 seconds and just over four seconds, respectively.
Despite manufacturer claims, the ID.3 GTX by Volkswagen boasts rapid acceleration due to its electric drive motor’s quick reactivity. The top speed of the GTX model reaches 111 mph, while the Performance version is restricted at 124 mph.
Volkswagen has implemented numerous modifications to enhance the driving experience of the GTX, setting it apart from the standard ID.3. The vehicle now boasts a progressive steering mechanism for more accurate control. Its front end utilizes a MacPherson configuration, and the rear features a multi-link suspension system, promising improved plushness, solidity, and maneuverability. Additionally, the GTX is equipped with rigid stabilizers and tuned specifically for this model.
The Performance edition comes equipped with the DCC adaptive chassis control system, which is controlled through the Vehicle Dynamics Manager. Utilizing cutting-edge technology, this system has a greater understanding of the movement of the wheels and vehicle structure, allowing it to make appropriate adjustments to the shock absorbers. The driver has the option to select from four different drive modes: Eco, Comfort, Sport, or Individual.
Volkswagen now has the ability to provide its customers with a variety of hot hatch choices, including those with front-wheel drive (Golf GTI), rear-wheel drive (ID.3 GTX), and all-wheel drive (Golf R).
The latest GTX models now come equipped with an upgraded 79 kWh lithium-ion battery, boasting a larger nett energy content. As per WLTP calculations, Volkswagen boasts a remarkable range of 373 miles for this electric hot hatch, making it quite impressive. In the unlikely event that the ID.3 GTX makes its way to the US, we can anticipate more realistic estimates by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The process of charging has been greatly simplified with the integration of thermal management capability which prepares the battery for charging. This ensures that the battery is at an optimal temperature upon arrival at the charging station, resulting in faster charging times and reduced wait periods. Additionally, a Electric Vehicle Route Planner has been implemented to facilitate easier planning for longer journeys.
When connected to a DC charging station, the ID.3 GTX is capable of recharging at a rate of up to 175 kWh, effectively refilling the battery from 10 to 80% in approximately 26 minutes.
The ID.3 GTX is equipped with a distinctive front bumper which features an A-shaped air intake positioned beneath the front license plate holder. The fascia boasts a diamond-style design that exudes a subtle sense of fierceness and is further accentuated by the arrow-shaped daytime-running lights. Additionally, the vehicle comes standard with LED matrix headlights, seamlessly connected via a sleek LED strip.
While traveling around the perimeter of the car, the most notable contrast lies in the 20-inch Skagen wheels sporting a diamond-cut coating (black can also be selected as an option). The base GTX model is equipped with 215 tires, but the Performance version boasts a wider 235 rubber for enhanced performance. Towards the back of the vehicle, a specially designed diffuser with a diamond design adds to the unique look of the GTX. Additionally, the package includes LED taillights that feature dynamic turn signals and an elegant night light design.
There are a total of five vibrant hues to choose from, one of which is the stunning Kings Red Metallic depicted in these photos. They consist of Moonstone Grey, Grenadilla Black Metallic, Glacier White Metallic, and Scale Silver Metallic. The traditional matte black and chrome accents have been replaced with sleek, sporty high-gloss black detailing.
When you enter the ID.3 GTX, you will be met with supportive sports seats made from a combination of recycled ‘Lurus’ fabric and leatherette. The seats are black but feature pops of color with red stitching, piping, and contrast seams. In addition to this option, customers can also choose the ergoActive seats which offer power adjustment, integrated headrests, and adjustable thigh support. These seats feature ArtVelours Eco microfleece upholstery and unique red details inspired by the early Golf GTI colors Tornado Red and Flash Red. The steering wheel also adds a touch of red with a six o’clock marker, stitching, and chromed GTX lettering.
The ID.3 GTX is set to feature a larger 12.9-inch infotainment system with the addition of ChatGPT capabilities as a component of its onboard voice assistant, IDA. For an additional fee, users can also access an augmented reality head-up display and a Wellness app.
Regrettably, it is unlikely that the ID.3 GTX will be made available in the United States. Nevertheless, in 2027, we can anticipate the realization of the ID. GTI concept as the next generation electric GTI.
